Starter Joe Musgrove and reliever Steven Brault were raised a half-hour's drive to the east of Petco Park.Saturday night, the focus shifts to northern San Diego County as Rancho Bernardo High grad Trevor Williams starts for the Pirates against his hometown club. While Musgrove and Brault were facing the Padres for the first time, the 26-year-old Williams pitched six innings against the Padres on May 20 in Pittsburgh. He gave up four runs on four hits -- including a two-run homer to Christian Villanueva -- in six innings but did not get a decision in a game won by the Padres, 8-5.The right-handed Williams (6-5, 4.03 ERA in 16 starts) will be opposed by left-handed rookie Joey Lucchesi (3-3, 3.57 ERA). Lucchesi had just gone on the disabled list with a strained glute muscle when the Padres visited Pittsburgh in May.Williams started the season with three straight wins but is 1-3 with a 6.09 ERA over his last seven starts. MLB Game Preview: New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins - 6/30/2018 - 4:10 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSMets' deGrom gets nod for game against Marlins 9h ago. 3 min read No matter how well he pitches, the New York Mets do not win very often when Jacob deGrom is on the mound. The Mets do not win very often regardless of the starting pitcher, which is why the phrase "deGrom trade" is an easy search engine term. The Mets were originally going to start deGrom Friday but scratched him due to a family situation, and the ace will start in the middle game of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Saturday at Marlins Park.On a team with one of the National League's worst records at 32-47, deGrom is doing his part even if the record does not show it. He is 5-3 with a 1.69 ERA, though three of those wins were when the Mets opened 11-1 and were 17-9 in April. The Mets are 15-38 since then after stranding 10 and wasting nine walks in Friday 's 7-2 loss to Miami. Handicapper Return on Investment. They are 6-10 when deGrom starts and have dropped eight of their last 10 games when deGrom pitches. Most of it is due to the sub-par offense as New York owns a .232 batting average. Sports Betting Handicapping. The Mets have scored three runs or fewer in nine of deGrom's last 10 starts, including last Saturday's 8-3 loss when he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers."My changeup was terrible," deGrom said. "My slider was good at times, but other times it wasn't even close to being a strike. So I had one pitch, my fastball, that I couldn't really locate. You're trying to get big league hitters out with a pitch that you don't really know where it's going, and the other ones were garbage. I just wasn't very good to night." It is because of the losing that the debate rages on about what the Mets should do with deGrom, who made his major league debut on May 15, 2014, and will not be a free agent until after the 2020 season.Whatever the decision is on deGrom it will be made by John Ricco, who is filling in along with Omar Minaya and J. P. Ricciardi while general manager Sandy Alderson focuses on cancer treatments. Before Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, he discussed the possibility of dealing of deGrom."We're going to talk about that," Ricco said. "We just kind of got into this. Sandy was on the record with one point of view. We'll get together to discuss it. Obviously, they're two huge pieces for us. We'll have to consider. For me, everything has to be on the table. But you have to look long and hard before you move a game-changing, top-of-the-rotation pitcher." Against Miami, deGrom is 4-4 with a 3.62 ERA in 14 career starts. < a href="https://www.cappertek.com/accessPicks.asp">Sports Handicapper Picks. This season he allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings in an 8-6 win at Miami on April 10 and pitched seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 home loss on May 23.While the Mets start their ace, Miami will unveil another prospect when Pablo Lopez starts. After Sandy Alcantra pitched five innings Friday, Lopez will be the sixth Miami pitcher to make his major league debut."It's still very unreal," Lopez told reporters before the series opener. "It still doesn't feel real that I'm right here with this field, with these teammates, this scenario. It's still very overwhelming, but still very exciting as well." Lopez is among four prospects acquired from the Seattle Mariners for David Phelps on July 20, and when he struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings during spring training, the Marlins noticed."I remember hearing at the winter meetings in November, I believe, how much our guys liked him and the presence he had," Miami manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "We were able to see it in spring training. It was impressive, just his whole demeanor, the way he handles himself. You can tell, he's a sharp kid, well prepared." In 12 combined starts for Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans, he is 2-3 with a 1.44 ERA while opposing hitters are hitting .196 (46-for-235). He is ranked sixth among full-season minor leaguers in ERA and WHIP (0.93) and leads all Miami minor league pitchers in ERA.Lopez started the season at Jacksonville, where he was 1-2 with a 0.62 ERA in eight starts. MLB Game Preview: Houston Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSScrappy Rays face challenge of Verlander, Astros 9h ago. 2 min read ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays continue to win games they perhaps shouldn't, and they'll have an opportunity for more of that Saturday against Houston's Justin Verlander. The Rays (40-41) hit the midway point of their 2018 season with a 3-2 win over Houston, giving them six wins in their last seven games. Sports Handicap. Their pitching has led the way -- three times in the last four games, they have held their opponent to three hits or less, this after doing so only three times in the first 77 games of this season."If we are going to win a lot of game and we are going to string a bunch together, we have to have good pitching," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "The timely hitting is great, but we have to stay in the ballgame. For us to have allowed three runs in 18 innings against arguably the best team in baseball, we should find a way to win one." Houston will send Verlander, who has been dominant (9-3, 1.82 ERA) but has gotten surprisingly little run support from a potent Astros lineup.Houston is just 11-7 in games he starts, and the Astros have scored a total of two runs in five of those losses. So Saturday could look like Thursday's 1-0 Astros win, or could look like Friday's 3-2 loss, which saw two errors factor in Tampa Bay's scoring.Verlander faced the Rays just 11 days ago in Houston, again pitching well, allowing one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, but ultimately taking a no-decision in a 2-1 loss. He has 136 strikeouts in 113 innings this season and a ridiculous 0.81 WHIP.Against the Rays for his career, Verlander is 8-3 with a 3.18 ERA, but since 2010, he's just 4-3, despite a 1.72 ERA in his last five starts against the Rays . At Tropicana Field, he's 5-2 all-time with a 2.53 ERA, including a 1.20 ERA in his last two outings. The Rays counter with reliever-turned-starter Ryne Stanek, who has thrived in the "opener" role that Tampa Bay has essentially created in the past six weeks. He's starting for the second time in three days against the Astros having thrown 1 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball Thursday night. For the month of June, he's pitched in 11 games and 14 2/3 innings without allowing a run. He's held opponents to just four hits, lowering his season ERA to 1.85, just barely above Verlander's.The Astros know they have to be careful with the white ceiling of Tropicana Field -- the Rays' three-run fourth inning got a spark Friday when center fielder Jake Marisnick couldn't hold onto a pop at the warning track, allowing a run to score."When you play here, you try to not take your eye off the ball," Marisnick said. "With the ceiling , I kind of glanced quickly at the ball, then looked back up and lost track. I wasn't able to come up with it. Fighting Predictions. That's a play I need to make 10 out of 10 times."

Suarez gave up one run in six innings and ran his streak to 13 starts without walking more than two."He really has that composure out there," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said of Suarez. "H e's got some savvy out there. He knows when to make his pitches. He knows when to be careful, too." The Diamondbacks will send right-hander Shelby Miller (0-1, 12.27 ERA) to the mound Saturday for his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery in an attempt so salvage another series win.The D-backs are 5-0-1 in their last six series since losing two of three at San Francisco from June 4-6. Giants rookie right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (2-1, 3.82) will make his sixth start of the season on Saturday. Rodriguez has never faced Arizona, but he allowed just one run and four hits over seven innings in his most recent start, on Sunday against San Diego. He did not get a decision but the Giants won the game 3-2.Miller, who underwent Tommy John surgery last May, made his first start of the season in Miami on Monday, when he gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings while reaching 95-96 mph on the radar gun."The fastball command was outstanding," Arizo na manager Torey Lovullo said. "I know he is working on his secondary stuff. Sports Betting Profit. That's to be expected. We know we see it in bullpens and at different tunes. I know that Shelby is going to be ready for that challenge." Miller, the key return in the trade that sent Ender Inciarte and Dansby Swanson to Atlanta at the 2015 winter meetings, used words of encouragement from Patrick Corbin and the Arizona training staff to get through rehab. Corbin underwent Tommy John in the spring of 2014 season and missed the whole year.&qu ot;I talked to Corbin a lot," Miller said. "The guys in the training room, day in and day out they were giving me reassurance. What to expect. I leaned on them and relied on them a lot. Expert Sports Picks. They were big. I am definitely feeling good." Miller admitted to feeling some nerves before the Miami start."For sure," he said. "It is different than any other game. It is a big day. I had some minor league rehab starts, but those don't even compare to the games that are mattering up here. I definitely had some jitters." Miller is 2-5 with a 3.51 ERA in nine career starts against the Giants.Slater has been tearing up the Pacific Coast League in his time between stints in San Francisco. He is slashing .344/.417/.564 with 24 doubles and five homers in 53 games with the River Cats. His 24 doubles were second in the league, and his batting average was sixth when was promoted a gain last Saturday. With third baseman Evan Longoria expected to miss at least another month, manager Bruce Bochy mentioned the possibility of giving Slater more time, especially against left-handed pitchers.Slater is hitting at least .300 against righties and lefties in Sacramento this season, and during his short stay wth the Giants before a leg injury in 2017 hit .333 in 38 plate appearances against lefties."We're missing a right-handed bat, and he could provide that," Bochy said. "Not that other guys can't, but you look at what he did tonight and what he's been doing. He's going to help stretch out this lineup and us some added offense, which we need against lefties." Even with veterans in the outfield, "You have to go with the guys who are swinging the bat well," Bochy said. "They dictate their lineup." Slater has made three starts since being recalled the most recent time Saturday."The first couple of times up and down, it is easy to lose focus," Slater said. "But for me it was try to prove a point that it wasn't a fluke, that I was here to stay."

MLB Game Preview: Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle Mariners - 6/30/2018 - 10:10 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle Mariners - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSRoyals, Mariners go back to the future 35m ago. 2 min read The future is back.Twenty years ago, Ken Griffey Jr. and the Seattle Mariners' marketing department put on one of the most memorable promotions in franchise history -- which is saying a lot, since Funny Nose Glasses Night in 1982 drew more fans than Gaylord Perry's 300th win two nights earlier -- with Turn Ahead the Clock Day.Instead of wearing retro uniforms like most teams do for Turn Back the Clock Day, the Mariners imagined what things might look like in 2027, when they will celebrate their 50th anniversary. The Kingdome was turned into the "Biodome." A DeLorean drove actor James Doohan, who played Scotty on "Star Trek," to the mound to deliver the ceremonial first pitch. The Mariners' Moose mascot was replaced by Marty the Mariners Martian. Griffey was referred to as "Digit 24" instead of his last name by the public-address announcer.Player positions were called quadrants. And the Mariners and their opponent that night, the Kansas City Royals, wore futuristic, untucked uniforms that Griffey, the Hall of Fame center fielder, helped design.According to Kevin Martinez, the marketing director for the Mariners in 1998, it was Griffey's idea to change the Mariners' colors from navy, teal and white to crimson, black and silver. Junior wore his hat backward and spray-painted his glove and spikes silver."There were always some surprises," Griffey recently told The Athletic. "You never knew what was going to happen that night. It was like, 'Stay tuned.'"Twenty years later, the Mariners and Royals will reprise Turn Ahead the Clock Night when they meet Saturday night at Safeco Field.Royals outfielder Jorge Bonifacio is certainly looking to the future after making his season debut in Fr iday night's 4-1 loss to the Mariners.Bonifacio missed the first 80 games of the season while serving a Major League Baseball suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug in spring training."I'm so excited to be back with the team," said Bonifacio, who batted .255 and hit 17 home runs as a rookie last season.Bonifacio batted .392 in 13 games for Triple-A Omaha before being activated. He batted fifth Friday, going 0-for-3."We're glad to have him back," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was swinging very well (at Omaha)."I mean, the kid hit 17 homers last year. ... Yeah, he was going to hit in the middle of the order, until all this surfaced." Bonifacio played left field Friday to give Alex Gordon a day off, but likely will be in right field Saturday."We are going to move him around. He's going to play," Yost said. "He's going to play some right, play some left. What difference does it make?"On the mound, right-handers Jason Hammel of the Royals (2-9, 5.34 ERA) and Felix Hernandez of the Mariners (7-6, 5.10) will be looking for vintage performances.Hammel, who won 15 games for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs in 2016, has lost four straight starts -- in which the Royals have scored a total of five runs. Sports Handicappers Rankings. The graduate of South Kitsap High School in nearby Port Orchard, Wash., is 3-3 with a 3.53 ERA in eight career appearances against Seattle, including seven starts.Hernandez, the American League's 2010 Cy Young Award winner, is 6-6 with a 3.15 ERA in 15 career starts against the Royals. MLB Game Preview: Chicago White Sox vs. Texas Rangers - 6/30/2018 - 9:05 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Chicago White Sox vs. Texas Rangers - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSWhite Sox look to rebound after getting blasted by Rangers 2h ago. 2 min read Texas was expected to be one of the major leagues' top power teams this season despite being in rebuilding mode. The Rangers proved that premise to be true when they flexed their considerable muscle on Friday and ripped five home runs, three of them in the first two innings, to set the tone in an 11-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a three-game series at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. The White Sox will try to get back on track with left-hander Carlos Rodon (1-2, 3.70 ERA) taking the hill Saturday to oppose ageless Rangers right-hander Bartolo Colon (4-5, 4.72).The Rangers' win provided a night off for closer Keone Kela, who on Wednesday saved his 20th game in 20 chances, the longest season-opening streak in club history. Kela broke Francisco Cordero's 2004 record of 19 consecutive saves and now has converted 22 straight chances dating to May 2017.The 22 consecutive saves constitute the third-longest streak in Texas history. Kela is nine saves shy of tying Joe Nathan's club record of 31 consecutive converted saves in 2012."It's a nice comfort zone to have," Rangers manager Jeff Banister told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram about Kela. "Most of the saves have been clean innings. (It has been fun) to watch the maturation process of Key out there on a nightly basis being able to calm it down and just go pitch by pitch." It looks as if the White Sox will be without right-hander Miguel Gonzales for a while longer. Gonzales, who has been on the 60-day disabled list since April 18 with right rotator cuff inflammation, returned from his rehab assignment after experiencing soreness in a throwing session after the start for Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday."It's a little setback, " White Sox manager Rick Renteria told mlb.com about Gonzales' situation. "He still felt a little something so he's going to be re-seen, re-evaluated, and we'll see where we go from there." Gonzalez opened the season in the rotation but was 0-3 with a 12.41 ERA before landing on the disabled list. Handicappers Free Picks. This is the second time he has had to restart his rehab.Rodon is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season. It will be his third start on the road and fifth career start against Texas. He picked up the win in his last start on June 24 at home against Oakland when he allowed two runs and seven hits with three strikeouts in eight innings.Rodon is 1-0 with a 3.91 ERA and .245 opponents' average in his previous starts against the Rangers.Colon will head to the mound for the 17th time this season and make his 15th start. He enters with 244 career wins, most in MLB h istory by a native of the Dominican Republic. He recently passed Juan Marichal (243) and is one win shy of matching Nicaragua's Dennis Martinez (245) for most victories by a native of Latin America.Colon ranks among AL leaders in pitches per inning (fifth, 15.0) and SO/BB ratio (ninth, 4.15) but has also permitted 19 home runs, third most in the AL. He will pitch on an extra days' rest after taking loss in the Rangers' 2-0 defeat on Sunday at Minnesota. The former White Sox pitcher (12 starts in 2009) did not face Chicago in the clubs' earlier series. He is 11-8 with a 3.84 ERA in 24 career appearances (all starts) against Chicago.

MLB Game Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees - 6/30/2018 - 7:15 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSYankees take on Red Sox, Sale 3h ago. 3 min read NEW YORK -- Greg Bird was rehabbing a right ankle injury for the first six meetings between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. He carried a .191 average and several frustrating at-bats into Friday's series opener. Sports Picks Today. Then he slugged two homers and possibly gave the Yankees something to think about with the first baseman's playing time against left-handers Chris Sale and David Price and the final two games. While Bird could get the game off, his New York temmates will get a crack at solving Sale on Saturday night in the second game of three-game series against Boston at Yankee Stadium.Bird posted his second career multi-homer game and the Yankees opened the series by hitting four homers in an 8-1 rout on Fr iday. After homering twice, Bird is batting 204 (19-for-93) in 29 games since coming off the disabled list."Perhaps, I think about that a little bit," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "It was really good to see Birdie impact the ball. I was happy for him and that's something that can kind of jump-start him a little bit because what we believe he brings is that left-handed on-base, power guy in this ballpark." If Bird is in the lineup, he will be getting his first career at-bats against Sale. If Bird is not in the lineup, it could be Brandon Drury or Neil Walker at first base.Regardless if Bird plays, the Yankees were glad to see him homer to left-center field and right-center field against Eduardo Rodriguez in the fifth and Justin Haley in the eighth."It's only a matter of time," Yankees right-fielder Aaron Judge said of Bird. "It takes a lot of time to kind of get in that groove." Sale is 7-4 with a 2.56 ERA this season but r olling of late.He is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts and in the last four starts has totaled 43 strikeouts in 28 innings while allowing a paltry .155 average.Sale last pitched Sunday when he allowed four hits and struck out 13 in a 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. Sale posted his second straight double-digit strikeout game, sixth this season and ended the outing by fanning Mike Zunino with a 100.5 mph fastball -- the fastest pitch of his career. This season as the Red Sox attempt to keep Sale fresh for the final months of the year, his velocity is steadily increasing. His average fastball was 92.5 in April, 95.6 in May and 97.0 this month."I think it's just getting back into a little bit better rhythm," Sale said of his increase in velocity. "I've been saying the same thing over the last three or four starts -- it's feeling good and getting into that tempo and getting back into a little bit better rhythm than I had been starting the y ear. I put a lot of work into it. I'm glad where we're at." If Sale posts double-digit strikeouts Saturday, it will mark the fourth time he has at least 10 strikeouts in three straight games."A lot of people get caught up on strikeouts," Sale said. "They're nice, but at the end of the day your job is to pitch as deep into that game as you can and keep as few runs off the board (as possible)." Sale enters the game with 153 strikeouts, two ahead of Houston's Gerrit Cole for the league lead. He also is hoping to see his teammates produce a better offensive showing after losing for the second time in eight games. The left-hander faced the Yankees on April 10 in a 14-1 win at Fenway Park. He is 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts) against the Yankees. While Mookie Betts was 2-for-4 and had his 25th multi-hit game, J. D. Martinez was 0-for-4 and is now hitless in his last nine at-bats.New York will counter with Sonny Gray, who is 5-5 with a 4.93 ERA.Gray is 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in his last five starts since lasting 3 2/3 innings in an 11-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on May 26. His last outing was last Saturday in Tampa Bay when he allowed four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-0 loss.Gray faced the Red Sox on April 12 in Boston when he allowed six runs and seven hits in a season-low three innings of a 6-3 loss. Since joining the Yankees, he is 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox. For his career, Gray is 1-5 with a 5.97 ERA in seven games against Boston.

MLB Game Preview: Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSDodgers' Maeda looks to continue success against Rockies 12m ago. 2 min read LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda will take the mound Saturday against a Colorado Rockies team that he has had success against over the past three years.Colorado Rockies starter German Marquez will take the mound Saturday on the road, where he has been excellent outside of the shadow of the Rocky Mountains.Something has to give at Dodger Stadium in a nationally televised game, when Dodgers right-hander Maeda (5-4, 3.44 ERA) faces off against Rockies right-hander Marquez (5-8, 5.53).The Rockies won the first game of the series 3-1 on Friday, and Maeda will try halt the Dodgers' two-game losing streak.Since returning from the disabled list after being sidelined by a hip strain, Maeda has posted a 2.87 ERA over three starts, including a scor eless seven-inning outing Monday against the Chicago Cubs when he struck out nine and picked up the win.The nine strikeouts were reminiscent of his best stretch of the season before his injury, when he struck out 32 batters over 24 1/3 innings, including a season-best 12 strikeouts in 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Rockies on May 23."Ever since coming off the DL, feeling-wise, this is the best I have felt," Maeda said through an interpreter, after holding the Cubs in check during a 2-1 Dodgers victory Monday. "Overall it was a much better feeling coming into this game than the other ones." Especially troublesome for the Rockies is that Maeda figures to be fresh for Saturday's outing, having thrown just 84 pitches in his latest start. Documented Handicappers. Then there is this: Maeda is 5-2 in eight career appearances (six starts) with a 2.11 ERA against the Rockies w ith 48 strikeouts.Marquez has struggled lately, having gone 1-4 in June with an 8.53 ERA, but there is no doubting his road success this year. He has a 7.93 ERA at home, but that mark falls off dramatically to 3.07 in 41 innings on the road. In fact, the Rockies have won four of Marquez's seven road starts this season.Marquez is 1-0 with a 3.91 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers. His two outings against them this season have been a mixed bag. On May 21 in Los Angeles, Marquez gave up one run over seven innings in a 2-1 Rockies victory. On June 2 at Colorado, he gave up four runs over six innings, although he didn't factor into the decision as the Dodgers rolled to a 12-4 victory. In his four starts since then, Marquez has given up at least five runs in each time. He gave up a combined 10 runs (nine earned) in his last two starts, both of which came at home."I know I have been in the league two years and if I execute my pitches, it doesn't matter how long they have known me," Marquez told reporters, through an interpreter, after he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings in an eventual 8-5 loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday. "It's about me executing my pitches.Marquez will face a Dodgers team that has 54 home runs in June, the most in franchise history for a single month.

MLB Game Preview: Atlanta Braves vs. St Louis Cardinals - 6/30/2018 - 7:15 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Atlanta Braves vs. St Louis Cardinals - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSCardinals hope to get offense going against Braves 2h ago. 2 min read In games where the St. Louis Cardinals hit homers and pitch well, they generally walk off the field with a win.But on nights where they can't connect with the long ball, they don't consistently make up for it with situational hitting or defense. Friday night's 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves was another example of that trend rearing its ugly head. After failing to cash in leadoff walks in the bottom of the first against Braves starter Julio Teheran, St. Louis simply couldn't crack the code. It eventually caught up with the Cardinals as they were held to one run for their second straight game. For St. Louis (42-38) to even the series Saturday night at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals will have to do a better job of converting runners in scoring position into runs whil e not giving up extra outs defensively. Sports Tipsters. The Cardinals' three errors Friday night marked their 17th multi-error game in 80 games.St. Louis is on a pace to commit more than 130 miscues this year, continuing a three-season trend of below-average defense. Permitting good teams like Atlanta (46-34) four or five outs in an inning is a recipe for disaster. The Braves started a 10-game road trip with a positive result. Sports Picks Today. Third baseman Johan Camargo was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with two runs and a two-run double off Jordan Hicks in the eighth that broke open a 1-0 game."Baseball is all about its ups and downs," Camargo said. "For me, it's all about maintaining the focus and just staying the path." Atlanta essentially heeded Camargo's credo, bouncing back from consecutive series losses against last-place teams Baltimore and Cincinnati. It will turn to left-hander Max Fried (0-2, 4.09 ERA) on Saturday to secure a series win.Fried is replacing veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy, who was put on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a knee injury. A former first-round pick of San Diego, Fried will make his first start since going five innings and giving up one earned run on May 28 in a no-decision against the New York Mets.It will be the second career appearance against the Cardinals for Fried, who last year tossed a scoreless inning in relief against them.Right-hander Luke Weaver (4-6, 4.59) will look for his second straight win for St. Louis. Weaver shrugged off a rough first inning Sunday in Milwaukee to grab an 8-2 win, fanning a season-high nine over 5 2/3 innings while yielding two runs off five hits and two walks.Weaver needed 32 pitches to make it through a two-run first inning, but started finding the range with his off-speed pitches. Handicapper Return on Investment. That made his fastball play bigger, and he rolled through the middle innings while the Cardinals bombed Jhoulys Chacin out of the box with five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth."The first inning, it was like, 'Here we go again.' It means a lot for him to right the ship," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny told mlb.com.Weaver, who snapped a seven-start winless streak in Milwaukee, will make his first career appearance against the Braves.

Picks and Parlays. They hope that offense shows up again Saturday as the Nationals attempt to win two straight games for the first time in more than three weeks. After a 17-7 rout on Friday night, the Nationals can pull even with the Philadelphia Phillies for second place in the National League East with a win Saturday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.Washington hit seven home runs against the Phillies on Friday, including two by rookie Juan Soto and the 20th of the season from Bryce Harper. Make Money Betting Sports. The team scored 17 runs on 18 hits in the win after comb ining for three runs on 12 hits in its previous three games. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Nationals, who are 9-15 in June and have not won consecutive games since June 5-6. Still, they are 42-38 on the season and one game behind the Phillies in the division.Right-hander Vince Velasquez (5-8, 4.69 ERA) will try to keep the Phillies in second place on Saturday. With one exception, Velasquez has been reliable for the Phillies over the last two months. Las Vegas Handicappers. The hard-throwing righty has allowed fewer than three earned runs in seven of his last 10 starts. He allowed 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 8 but has a 2.73 ERA in his other nine starts dating back to May 5.Velasquez, who averages 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings, had seven strikeouts in six innings against the Yankees on Monday. He gave up two runs on three hits and four walks in the outing an d took the loss as the Phillies' offense struggled in the 4-2 defeat."I had a couple walks here and there, and I had to pitch around some guys," Velasquez told reporters after the game. "It's a tough lineup to face." Saturday's start will be Velasquez's sixth in his career against Washington. He is 2-2 with a 5.33 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in his first five starts. This season, Velasquez held the Nationals to one run on one hit and four walks over five innings in a May 5 start in which he got the win.Jeremy Hellickson is expected to be activated off the disabled list and make the Saturday start for the Nationals. Hellickson (2-0, 2.28) strained his right hamstring in a June 3 start and has not pitched since. He made a rehab start for Class A Potomac last Sunday and gave up 11 runs in 4 2/3 innings. But he said he felt healthy after the outing."Physically, I felt fine," Hellickson told the Washington Post last week. "I mean, obvious ly not how I wanted it to go, but I felt fine. Felt my stuff was pretty good. Just command was a little shaky, but (my) hammy was 100 percent." Hellickson was solid before the injury. He posted a 1.30 ERA and .548 opponent OPS in five starts during May, and the Nationals won each of those outings.Hellickson pitched for the Phillies in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. In his only career start against Philadelphia, Hellickson did not allow an earned run in eight innings while with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2015 season.

MLB Game Preview: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds - 6/30/2018 - 4:10 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETS'The Replacements' keep Brewers rolling past Reds 2h ago. 3 min read The strength of a contending club often isn't determined by who plays every day, but who plays only every few days. Or every few weeks. Or even every few months. The Milwaukee Brewers were concerned when they began their Friday night game in Cincinnati with two injured starting outfielders, Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich, then lost the other starter, Ryan Braun, to lower back tightness in the seventh inning. But manager Craig Counsell plugged in exactly the right pieces, and a spare outfield group that probably should be called "The Replacements" keyed an 8-2 victory over the Reds. How's this for a couple of fills-in, who did nothing except fill up the box score: Keon Broxton was 3-for-4 with two homers, four RBIs, a run stolen by some alert baserunni ng and an exceptional sliding catch. And Hernan Perez, who came in after Braun was hurt, contributed a two-run double to start a five-run ninth inning."They (the Brewers outfield) have been the workhorse of this team, so I've got to come in and fill their spot while they're down. It was a good night," said Broxton, who played in only his third game this season.Because their bench came through yet again -- on Thursday night, part-time starter Eric Thames hit his third consecutive game-winning homer against the Reds -- the Brewers can assure them of winning the four-game series by taking Saturday's game at Great American Ball Park."It speaks to our depth again ... we've had a couple of games like that where (bench players) make meaningful contributions," Counsell said. "With Yelich down, we're counting on Keon, so it's got to be a good feeling for him." The last-place Reds had won nine of 10 coming in to the series, but stil l can't seem to solve the Brewers, who have won seven of eight games against Cincinnati. Milwaukee owns the National League's best record at 48-33."These guys have been battling all year and they're in a good spot right now, so I'm trying to do my best to keep them right there," Broxton said.Milwaukee will send out right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (6-3), who has lost his last two decisions, on Saturday to face Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle (6-6), who has won his last three decisions during a span of six starts."We've got to play better. ... Free Guaranteed Sports Picks. Their pitching kind of stifled us the last two nights," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "We've got to turn it back on ... crank it up again with our bats." Yelich sat out with a lower back issue. He's listed as day to day -- and so Broxton made his second start since being recalled from T riple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday.Broxton had an RBI single in the second against Sal Romano (4-8), then hit the first of his two homers to make the score 2-0 in the fourth. Sports Handicapper Records. Then, with Milwaukee up 2-1 in the eighth after reliever Michael Lorenzen's homer for the Reds, Broxton appeared to be caught off third by Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart. But he eluded a tag by falling down, then scored as Orlando Arcia distracted the Reds by allowing himself to be tagged off second.Broxton finished quite an evening's work with a two-run homer in the ninth and a stretched-out catch of Scooter Gennett's drive into the right-center field gap with two runners on base."He's been up and down (from the minors) a little bit, but he's very talented," Riggleman said of Broxton, who hit only .220 while spending most of last season with Milwaukee. "He can do a lot of things -- he can hit with power, he can run and he plays great defense." The Reds didn't do much against Brewers starter Chase Anderson, who limited them to one other hit besides Lorenzen's homer in six innings, and relievers Josh Hader, Jeremy Jeffress and Dan Jennings. Now, the Brewers would like to get Chacin straightened out. His ERA jumped from 3.18 to 3.82 as he gave up eight runs, nine hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings during an 8-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Chacin is 2-3 in nine career games against the Reds. He didn't get the decision during a 6-5 Brewers win on April 30.In Mahle's only previous start against the Brewers, Thames beat him with a two-run homer in a 2-0 Milwaukee win on April 18.

MLB Game Preview: Los Angeles Angels vs. Baltimore Orioles - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSAiling Angels look to make it two straight at Orioles 3h ago. 2 min read BALTIMORE -- The Los Angeles Angels broke a six-game losing streak on Friday night. Winning Sports Handicappers. They hit two homers and scored a 7-1 victory over the slumping Baltimore Orioles. That's a step in the right direction for a team that's struggled lately, and the Angels hope to keep moving forward in the second game of this weekend series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET at Camden Yards. The Angels have been battered by injuries, and manager Mike Scioscia is hoping they can turn things around."It's been tough," Scioscia said. "We've been banged up, a lot of injuries. When you lose the top guys in your rotation and a lot of starters, it's tough. We're just grinding th rough a rough stretch right now, so we're just trying to turn it around." The Angels (42-41) will send left-hander Tyler Skaggs (6-5, 2.69 ERA) to pitch Saturday versus Baltimore's Andrew Cashner (2-8, 4.70).Skaggs has been effective in June, going 3-1 with an 0.67 ERA. He lost his last start, on Monday against the Royals, despite giving up just one run in seven innings. He has no record or ERA after pitching just once against the Orioles, who now have lost six in a row. Skagg's only appearance against Baltimore was a start in 2014, when he pitched shutout ball over 4 2/3 innings, allowing no hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.Cashner has struggled at times this season but also thrown well despite not getting much help from his team's bats. He has not recorded a win since May 21.Cashner has made five career appearances, including two starts, against the Angels and has a 1-0 mark with a 3.94 ERA.The Orioles' already injury-riddled bullpen took an other hit when the team said Friday that reliever Darren O'Day, on the disabled list with a left hamstring injury, is deciding whether to have surgery on the leg.The sidewinder has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, so he won't be back until at least late August. He injured the hamstring when trying to field a bunt against Seattle earlier this week.Baltimore made a flurry of moves Friday. Sports Handicapping Sites. The Orioles recalled left-hander Paul Fry and right-hander Ryan Meisinger from Triple-A Norfolk. Both made their major league debuts in Friday's loss. Meisinger came in first, and the right-hander allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Fry also went 1 2/3 innings but did not give up a run. Sports Illustrated Picks. The left-hander struck out the first two hitters he faced -- including Mike Trout. The Orioles also optioned starters/long men Jimmy Yacabonis and Yefry Ramirez back to Norfolk after they combined to pitch nine innings versus the Mariners Thursday. In a separate move, the Orioles designated infielder Corban Joseph (brother of catcher Caleb) for assignment.Baltimore now stands at 23-58 at the halfway point, one of the worst records in major league history. In addition, the Orioles have lost 16 of their past 17 home games.Still, manager Buck Showalter is holding out hope that the team can do something positive in the final 81 games and wants the Orioles to believe that also."(The first half) has been tougher on our fans and our players (than on me)," Showalter said. "As tough and as bad as things have been for 81 games, they can be just as good the other way around."

MLB Game Preview: Cleveland Indians vs. Oakland Athletics - Date: 6/30/2018 TICKETSTICKETSStreaking A's take on Indians 15m ago. 2 min read OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland Athletics fans will get a chance to see their new record-tying pitcher in person for the first time Saturday when right-hander Edwin Jackson takes the mound against the Cleveland Indians. The 34-year-old Jackson (0-0, 1.50 ERA) made history Monday when he pitched a 5-4 win for the A's at Detroit.Oakland became Jackson's 13th team in his 16-year career, allowing Jackson to tie a former member of the A's, Octavio Dotel, for most major league franchises in a career.Jackson did not get a decision in his A's debut despite allowing just one run and six hits in six innings. He has, however, had a lot of success against the Indians in his career.Jackson has pitched 15 times, 13 as a starter, against Cleveland in his career, going 9-1 with a 2.76 ERA.The ni ne wins are the fifth-most for an active Indians opponent, trailing just Justin Verlander (20) and three players he can tie with a win Saturday -- Zack Greinke (10), David Price (10) and Rick Porcello (10).The .900 winning percentage is the second-best among active pitchers with five or more career decisions against the Indians, trailing only another former A's pitcher, Gio Gonzalez (6-0).Jackson admitted thoroughly enjoying Monday's comeback effort."It's a lot of fun pitching in games like that, kind of the new guy and wanting to set a good first impression," he said.Jackson could have a similar feeling Saturday as it will be his first home game as a member of the A's. He has pitched two previous games in Oakland, both as a visitor, going 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA.The veteran will be backed by an A's team that has won five in a row and 11 of its last 13. "They gave me a huge opportunity that I'm really thankful for." Cleveland will counter on the mound Saturday with rookie right-hander Adam Plutko (4-1, 4.65), who has never faced the A's.Like Jackson, Plutko is coming off a successful outing against Detroit, allowing two runs and six hits in six innings in a 12-2 win last Sunday. He'll find himself having to deal with one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball, Oakland second/third baseman Jed Lowrie, who contributed a home run to Friday's 3-1 win in the series opener.Lowrie has four singles, three doubles and three home runs in his last five games.
