Good Return on Investment. The Nationals set the team scoring mark dating to their days as the Montreal Expos in 1969.It was the Mets' most-lopsided loss in their 57-season history, worse than a 26-7 pounding by Philadelphia in 1985.Reyes made the first pitching appearance of his career, and the 35-year-old infielder got tagged for home runs to Matt Ad ams and Mark Reynolds in a six-run eighth. Not only has he pitched well at Dodger Stadium, but he held the Dodgers to one unearned run over s ix innings on July 20 at Milwaukee.Miley gave up two runs over five innings in a Brewers victory at San Francisco on Thursday.Slugging Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar was given the day off Monday in a nod to his recent struggles but is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday. Aguilar has just six hits over his last 47 at-bats.Aguilar was second in the National League in slugging percentage at .582 at the start of play Monday."I've already passed (this test) before," Aguilar said, according to MLB.com. "Being in Triple-A for three years, it was tough. It kind of you prepares you for things. ... Baseball is up and down, and right now I'm a little bit down. But we're winning games, and that's the most important thing. Now we've got to keep pushing." The Brewers' offense has been led of late by Los Angeles-area native Christian Yelich, who is the most recent National League player of the week after going 15-for-29 in the seven gam es before Monday. He extended his hit streak to 14 games with a double in the first inning Monday as the Brewers earned a 5-2 victory.Manny Machado made his home debut Monday at Dodger Stadium and L. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement he had spoken to Turner about the tweets.Weather and roster moves permitting, Mets left-hander Steven Matz (5-8, 3.79 ERA) will oppose right-hander Tanner Roark (4-12, 4.55) on Tuesday night.Roark picked up his first win since June 6 with a stellar eight-inning effort against the Milwaukee Brewers his last time out. He allowed no runs and three hits while striking out 11 and walking one."(I was) just slow, slower. Gambling Profit. Try to think not to be too quick to the plate," R oark told the Washington Post. "I had to let my foot, my leg, fire before I go. Unless I get behind the ball, it's flat." Roark had allowed four or more earned runs in five of his previous six starts. The Nationals have lost all three of Roark's starts against the Mets this season, with the right-hander allowing 11 runs in 17 innings. For his career, Roark is 7-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 20 games, 14 of them starts.Matz has allowed nine runs in 11 innings of his last two starts. He gave up four runs and three hits in six innings against the Pirates in his most recent outing. He struck out nine and walked two in a 12-6 Mets win and retired the final 10 batters he faced."I definitely felt like I settled in," Matz, who noted that he was sluggish while warming up before the game, told Newsday. "It was almost like I got a little tired and I was able to stay smooth instead of muscle up a little bit. And that works for me. It helped me out for sure." He has allowed six earned runs in 15 innings of three starts against Washington this season. Matz is 1-3 with a 2.64 ERA in seven starts against the Nationals.

It was the Rangers' fifth straight win and snapped a three-game victory streak for the Diamondbacks. The Rangers will send ageless right-hander Bartolo Colon (5-9, 5.02 ERA) to the hill in the series finale while Arizona will counter with right-hander Zack Godley (11-6, 4.73).Texas parted w ith Kela, who's been great as the Rangers' closer this season, in a trade called "challenging" by Rangers general manager Jon Daniels."Keone has been awesome the last couple years, a dominant closer for us," Daniels said. "Ultimately felt, where we are, it made sense to consider these kind of deals where we can get multiple players." The 25-year-old Kela has 24 saves and a 3.44 ERA this season.Kela, a Texas native, learned of the deal after being called from the bullpen in the seventh inning Monday night."I'm still a little shocked, but I'm excited that it's a new beginning, a new journey that I get to venture into," he said. "Just forever grateful for the opportunity to play here in Texas, all the support from the fans." And as for Beltre, Texas would only consider sending him to a team that has a legitimate chance to win the World Series. Sports Experts. The Braves, Red Sox and Indians would be great landing spots for him but there is nothing eminent and the clock is ticking."My head tells me any ballclub that's in a position of the (postseason) hunt would definitely want Adrian on their team," Texas manager Jeff Banister said about Beltre prior to Monday's game."But the value of having Adrian on this team is invaluable. I know (Daniels) and Adrian have a solid relationship and the two of them have communicated on this quite a bit." I'm just like everybody else, not sure which way it's going to go and which way teams are going to decide to do this. Who they are going to try to pick off, who might be available." Cleveland's front office will be working the phones ahead of the deadline, too. Outfield help is hig h on the wish list and the team is believed to be among those checking in on the availability of Nationals' superstar Bryce Harper.Reports have also inked the Indians to Detroit's Leonys Martin and Nick Castellanos, Cincinnati's Billy Hamilton, Toronto's Curtis Granderson and Derek Dietrich of the Marlins."I don't want to get too in-depth in what they're talking about trade-wise," Cleveland manager Terry Francona told MLB.com. "That's why I try to be pretty consistent. Cleveland sends right -hander Trevor Bauer to the mound Tuesday. MLB Game Preview: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Oakland Athletics - 7/31/2018 - 10:05 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Oakland Athletics - Date: 7/31/2018 StubHubStubHubA's, Jays face each other amid trade rumors 32m ago. 2 min read OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two teams that figure to be active right up to the Tuesday afternoon trade deadline duel for the second time in two days shortly thereafter when the Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland Athletics continue their three-game series. The A's rebounded from an offensive slump in Colorado with a two-homer, 10-run explosion Monday night in a 10-1 win in the opener of an eight-game homestand. The Blue Jays took the field shortly after the announcement of their third trade in the past week, sending suspended pitcher Roberto Osuna to the Houston Astros for three players, including former closer Ken Giles.Giles might be in uniform for Tuesday's game in Oakland, and if so would join infielder Brandon Drury, acquired last week from the New York Yankees, as Blue Jays newc omers.Drury played his fourth game for Toronto on Monday night, going 0-for-4. He'd gone 2-for-8 in his first three games.Rumors have swirled around several other Blue Jays, and in the other direction for the A's, who some expect to be buyers before the deadline. The A's are said to be exploring options in starting pitching.Oakland surely doesn't need an upgrade for Monday's starter, Edwin Jackson, who lowered his ERA since being plucked by the A's from the scrap heap in June to 3.32 with 5 2/3 shutout innings in the 10-1 win.The A's took time after the game to celebrate Jackson's 100th career win, one that manager Bob Melvin thought was significant for more than just one guy."Important win for us today," he assured of a team that had been held to four runs in the three frustrating defeats at Colorado. "We can score some runs. Good night all around for the A's." Right-hander Trevor Cahill (2-2, 3.43), one of the A's starters who find themselves with an uncertain future given the possible additions at the trade deadline, will attempt to follow up Jackson's gem with one of his own.Cahill is coming off his worst of three starts since returning from an Achilles injury, having allowed five runs and seven hits in a 7-6 win over Texas last Thursday. The 30-year-old hasn't fared well against the Blue Jays in the past, going 1-3 with a 6.83 ERA in five career starts. In fact, Cahill has never retired Drury in his pre-Toronto days, with the former Arizona Diamondback and Yankee recording a single and three walks in four plate appearances.Right-hander Sam Gaviglio (2-3, 4.65), acquired in March from Kansas City, will oppose Cahill for the Blue Jays, having won winless in his last 11 starts dating back to May 25.He pitched one of his best games of the season against Oakland on May 19, throwing 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball. He did not get a decision in a 5-4 loss. He's 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two career starts against the A's.Of course, the Blue Jays didn't have Giles in their bullpen for Gaviglio's earlier outing against the A's this season. The right-hander saved 34 games for the Astros last season, and had 12 more this season before losing his job.

MLB Game Preview: Colorado Rockies vs. St Louis Cardinals - 7/31/2018 - 8:15 PM EST

MLB Game Preview: Colorado Rockies vs. St Louis Cardinals - Date: 7/31/2018 StubHubStubHubOzuna giving Cardinals a surge of power vs. Rockies 16m ago. 2 min read The guy the St. Louis Cardinals acquired in the offseason to give their offense a power surge may finally be about to provide it.Left fielder Marcell Ozuna walked the Colorado Rockies off in Monday night's series opener, cracking a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-4 win. It was the third straight game in which Ozuna homered, giving him 13 for the year. That's still a far cry from the 37 he slugged last year for Miami, but with St. Louis still in contention for a playoff spot, Ozuna's sudden longball streak bodes well. He'll try to continue it Tuesday in game two of the four-game set at Busch Stadium."I just stayed on it and took a regular swing," he said to Fox Sports Midwest moments after the first walkoff blast of his career. "I've been working all the time with the hitting coach, looking for success." Ozuna snapped a stretch of 35 games without a homer with a first-inning grand slam Saturday against the Chicago Cubs' Jose Quintana, then smacked a two-run shot Sunday night off Kyle Hendricks. Ozuna lined out three times and walked Monday night before drilling a Jake McGee fastball over the wall in left-center.Cardinals interim manager Mike Shildt isn't surprised that Ozuna is starting to play pepper with the fans in the bleachers."It's going in a good direction," Shildt said. "He's a talented guy who's getting consistency and good at-bats. He's getting a good pitch to hit and letting his strength play." Ozuna's game-winning clout upped St. Louis to 54-52, allowing it to cap a comeback from a 4-0 fifth-inning deficit on a night where it probably lost starter Carlos Martinez to the disabled list for the third time this year.Martinez fan ned nine over 4 2/3 innings before leaving with a mild right shoulder strain. Shildt said after the game that Martinez would probably miss multiple starts but was hopeful the injury wouldn't be worse. The Cardinals bullpen had to cover 5 1/3 innings following Martinez's departure, and if recent history means anything, might have to work hard again Tuesday night. Starter Jack Flaherty (4-5, 3.28) has lasted past five innings just three times in his last 10 starts.Flaherty was tagged with a 7-3 loss Wednesday in Cincinnati despite fanning eight over five innings, allowing three runs off four hits and two walks. He'll make his first career appearance against Colorado.Jon Gray (8-7, 5.16) will take the mound for the Rockies (57-48), hoping to build on the success of his first two starts since a brief demotion to Triple-A. After stifling Seattle on a run in 7 1/3 innings on July 14, Gray then permitted only one hit and one earned run over seven innings Wednesday agains t Houston, although he settled for a no-decision in Colorado's 3-2 win."We used the curveball tonight and it was a really good tool to get them off the fastball," Gray said to MLB.com about his outing against the Astros.Gray has been battered for 11 runs over 8 1/3 innings in two career starts against the Cardinals, losing his only decision.

MLB Game Preview: Cincinnati Reds vs. Detroit Tigers - Date: 7/31/2018 StubHubStubHubReds, Tigers open series after trade deadline 6h ago. 2 min read The specter of the non-waiver trade deadline looms over both the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.Players on both sides of those non-contenders can breathe a little easier once it passes by on Tuesday afternoon. Both front offices have been trying to move veteran players for prospects in a buyer's market. Once the uneasiness is lifted at the 4 p.m. ET deadline, the remaining players can get down to business as the Reds visit the Tigers for a two-game series beginning Tuesday night.Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said last week that the players should take a positive view of potentially getting moved to a contender."When somebody wants you, that's a good thing in this game," Gardenhire told the Detroit News. "If someone is interested, and would like to have you p itch (or play) for them, I'm happy for him."This is the time of year, guys, all of them, want to play or get into the playoffs. You never want to stop them if they get that opportunity. I've been there a few times and that's kind of the route you want to go. Free Sport Pick. That's when it's really fun and real entertaining." The scheduled starting pitchers for Tuesday's game haven't experienced much joy this season, but they're both coming off encouraging outings.Reds right-hander Homer Bailey was activated from the disabled list and delivered a quality start. He gave up two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings against St. Louis on Wednesday. He wound up with a no-decision in a 4-2 extra-innings loss.Bailey threw 115 pitches in his first start since May 28. He was sidelined by right knee inflammation, then appeared in seven minor league games during hi s rehab assignment."I'd rather get a win," Bailey said during his postgame press conference. "We had a couple of pitches working that we were able to get some swings and misses on. Really, there were only a few that they did damage on." Bailey (1-7, 6.29 ERA) had given up at least three earned runs in his last nine starts before the DL stint."That was one of the best starts we have had from anyone all year," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said to MLB.com.Bailey has only faced the Tigers once in his career and got a no-decision while allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings.Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (5-9, 4.53) notched his first victory since June 7 on Wednesday. He held Kansas City to two runs and seven hits in six innings with seven strikeouts. Boyd didn't issue a walk in the 8-4 win."I don't put much weight on the (personal) wins and losses either way," Boyd told the Detroit News. "It's when you don't give your team a chance to win, that's when it hurts you." Boyd found success by working at a quicker pace and relying more on his fastball."What you have to do is speed up hitters," Gardenhire said. "He can locate it pretty good, and when he can pound that fastball in and away, it gets them off his other stuff. It makes him that much better." Boyd lost his lone career start against the Reds, giving up five runs in four innings.

"We'll be playing a lot of baseball, so it will be good to have (Allard) in the mix." Straily has been tough on the Braves this season. He's 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts, striking out 11 and allowing only one homer in 12 innings. In eight career star ts against Atlanta, Straily is 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA.Straily had a stretch of five straight quality starts snapped in his last outing when he allowed three runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings against Washington. His ERA for July was 2.84 and ranked ninth among National League starters."All the runs I gave up were executed pitches," Straily said. "That's just baseball." MLB Game Preview: Los Angeles Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays - Date: 7/31/2018 StubHubStubHubTrade deadline looms for Rays before series with Angels 3h ago. 2 min read ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- How much different will the Tampa Bay Rays be by the start of Tuesday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels? The Rays (53-53) have dropped three straight, allowing at least 11 runs in each of their losses to the Baltimore Orioles, and the Angels (54-53) are coming in from the opposite direction, having won four of five coming in.But Tampa Bay is expected to continue to sell off some of its key assets in advance of Tuesday's trade deadline, potentially including top starter Chris Archer. Sports Bettors Phone Leads. The Rays traded away three pitchers in three days last week, dealing away starter Nathan Eovaldi to the Boston Red Sox, reliever Matt Andriese to the Arizon a Diamondbacks and reliever Jonny Venters to the Atlanta Braves.Tampa Bay had pushed through trade after trade -- the offseason saw Evan Longoria, Corey Dickerson, Jake Odorizzi and Steven Souza all dealt away, then closer Jesus Colome and outfielder Denard Span early this season. Despite all of that turnover and key injuries, the Rays were three games above .500 before the Orioles won three straight. On Tuesday, Tampa Bay will turn to reliever-turned-"opener" Ryne Stanek (1-3, 2.43 ERA), who is coming off a rare bad outing, giving up three runs on two home runs in two innings Saturday against the Orioles. Stanek had allowed three runs in his previous 23 appearances, going back to the beginning of June, and saw his ERA balloon from 1.86 to 2.43 in one appearance.Stanek faced the Angels in May, giving up two runs in a harmless ninth inning of what ended up a 5-3 win for the Rays. Adding in two outings last season, Stanek has a 7.71 career ERA against the Angels with no hits but four walks in his games last year.Los Angeles counters with red-hot Tyler Skaggs, a 27-year-old left-hander who has allowed eight earned runs in his last eight starts, going just 5-2 in that span but lowering his ERA from 3.60 to 2.62 along the way. Baseball Predictions. That ERA is nearly two runs lower than the 4.55 he carried last season and a run under his career mark coming in.Skaggs also pitched well against the Rays this season, taking a shutout into the sixth inning and giving up just one run and six hits while striking out seven. For his career, he's 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Rays, with his other outing in 2014.Angels star Mike Trout has always fared well against the Rays, with a .305 career average and 12 home runs and 27 RBIs in just 154 at-bats. He's even better at Tropicana Field, where he has a .344 average and five home runs in 61 at-bats.Will the Rays make any mor e moves before the first pitch is thrown against the Angels? Tampa Bay's remaining lineup should include former Angels hitter C. J. Cron, who has reset career highs already this season with 22 home runs and 53 RBIs in his first year with the Rays.
