Costello to overcome a slow night by Heisman Trophy runner-up Bryce Love and No. 13 Stanford opened the season with a 31-10 victory over San Diego State on Friday. Love was held to 29 yards on 18 carries as the Aztecs focused their defense on stopping the man who led all Power 5 backs with 2,118 yards rushing last season. After a slow start in the opener for both teams, the Cardinal made San Diego State pay for that decision. Costello connected with Arcega-Whiteside on a 38-yard score in the second quarter and then on plays from 19 and 80 yards in the third quarter as the Aztecs defensive backs struggled to contend with Stanford's big receiver. Arcega-Whiteside finished with six catches for 226 yards. Costello added a 19-yard TD pass to Colby Parkinson in the fo urth quarter to break open what had been a close game for more than a half. THE TAKEAWAYSan Diego State: The Aztecs looks like they have another dynamic back to follow 2,000-yard rushers Donnel Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny, who led the way the past two years. Washington ran for a career-high 158 yards on 24 carries, gaining 84 on the first TD drive and adding a 39-yard run in the third quarter. Jet Toner missed a 38-yard field goal on the opening drive and the offense struggled to get going early as the Aztecs bottled up Love. A trick play flopped too when receiver Quin Jernighan's fluttering pass for Eckels from the 10 was picked off by cornerback Faion Hicks in the third quarter. Preseason All-American linebacker T. J. NCAAF Game Recap: Army (14) vs. Duke (34) - Date: 8/31/2018 Aug 31, 2018 DURHAM, N. C. Daniel Jones threw for one touchdown and rushed for another score, helping Duke open with a 34-14 victory over Army on Friday night. Jones was 13 of 17 for 197 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run and a 25-yard scoring pass to Aaron Young. Brittain Brown had a 12-yard touchdown run and backup Deon Jackson added a 7-yard score. Number #1 Sports Handicapping Service. The Blue Devils responded to both Army touchdowns by scoring TDs of their own to win their opener for the seventh straight year and atone for their most recent loss - a 21-16 defeat at Army last November. Kelvin Hopkins Jr. was 10 of 21 for 197 yards - the most yards passing for Army since 2015 - with a short rushing touchdown and a 45-yard scoring pass to Cam Harrison. S port Handicapping. That touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter pulled the Black Knights to 24-14. Jones followed with his TD to Young that restored Duke's 17-point lead, and Ben Humphreys effectively ended it by blocking Landon Salyers' 45-yard field goal attempt with less than 7 minutes left. Game Fixing. THE TAKEAWAYArmy: The Black Knights, who led the Bowl Subdivision last season at 362. 3 yards rushing per game but are replacing four starting offensive linemen from that team, were more willing to air it out with Hopkins. He threw more passes in the first half (five) than Army did in seven of its games in 2017, and finished with the academy's most yards passing since its 208-yard day against rival Navy three years ago. Duke: The good news for Duke's defense: the Blue Devils recovered two fumbles from an Army team that lost just five of them during its 10-win season in 2017. Now, the bad: Duke's secondary was at times lit up by the option-oriented Black Knights, who have pretty much ignored the forward pass over the years. NCAAF Game Recap: Utah State (31) vs. Michigan State (38) - Date: 8/31/2018 Aug 31, 2018 EAST LANSING, Mich. Connor Heyward scored his second touchdown with 2 minutes left to put No. 11 Michigan State ahead and the Spartans held on to beat Utah State 38-31 on Friday night. Sports Betting Handicapping. The Spartans trailed until the second quarter, built a 13-point lead late in the third and fell behind late in the opener for both teams. Darwin Thompson put the Aggies ahead with a 1-yard run, his second go-ahead score of the game, with 5:05 remaining. Their defense couldn't make one more stop to beat the highest-ranked team in school history, surpassing the victory over No. 18 BYU in 2014. Utah State did have one more chance to send the game to overtime - or possibly pull off the upset - but Joe Bachie tipped and intercepted a pass at midfield with 1:15 remaining . Michigan State's Brian Lewerke was 23 of 33 for 287 yards with two TDs, an interception and a fumble. Jordan Love completed 29 of 44 passes for 319 yards with two interceptions. Heyward scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter and a 17-yard run in the third. He is the son of the late Craig ''Ironhead'' Heyward, an NFL running back from 1988-1998. The sophomore ran for 436 yards and did not score last season. Free Picks for Today. THE TAKEAWAYUtah State: Matt Wells helped the Aggies earn a bowl bid last year for the sixth time and in seven seasons and they seem to have a shot at playing in the postseason again. Their no-huddle, hurry-up offense is going to be a problem for some teams. On defense, they can pressure quarterbacks and make plays in the secondary. Michigan State: Mark Dantonio will have plenty of teachable moments to show the Spartans on film. They were able to overcome a sloppy performance against a Mountain West Conference program, but may not be as fortunate against Big Ten competition. Western Michigan will have another shot at Syracuse in 2019 at the Carrier Dome. UP N EXTSyracuse: The Orange host FCS program Wagner in its home opener on Sept. 8. "Naturally there'll be a range that we'll want to stay in."This is going to be fluid. Rookie right-hander Jaime Barria (8-9, 3.67 ERA) will start the second game of the series for the Angels (65-69). It will mark his 21st start on the season and 10th on the road. Barria was charged with the loss on Aug 25 against the Astros after allowing four earned runs and five hits over three innings, his second-shortest start of 2018. In two starts against Houston this season, Barria is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He will make his first career appearance at Minute Maid Park.Left-hander Framber Valdez (2-0, 0.96 ERA) will make his second career start and third appearance for the Astros (82-52) on Friday. McCann has been sidelined since June 30 (right knee surgery)."We're going to get him back in the mix right away," Astros manager A. J. Hinch said. "I want to see his agility, I want to see his mobility, I want to see him hit with some leverage on his knee -- all things that he's shown in the minor leagues and he's telling me that he can do."His ability behind the plate to run a game, to control the pitching staff, the trust of the pitching staff will come back immediately. MLB Game Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs. Cleveland Indians - Date: 8/31/2018 StubHubStubHubIndians' Kluber hopes to get rolling vs. Rays 6h ago. 2 min read CLEVELAND -- With a 14-game lead in the American League Central, it will not be a high-stress September for the postseason-bound Cleveland Indians. But the Indians do have some priorities in the last month of the regular season. One of them involves their starting pitcher on Friday night when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the first game of a three-game series at Progressive Field. That pitcher is Corey Kluber, whom the Indians would like to get on a roll going into the postseason. Gambling Profit. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has had an up and down second half of the season, which started at the All-Star break, during which he received an injection to deal with right knee inflammation.Since getting that injectio n, Kluber has been better, but not to the level he consistently pitched to last year when he won his second Cy Young Award. In his last 13 starts, Kluber is 6-5 with a 4.05 ERA.That includes his last start this past Saturday against the Kansas City Royals, the lowest scoring team in the American League.Kluber lost that game 7-1, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs and nine hits, with six strikeouts and two walks."He threw a couple fastballs that he didn't locate real well, and they made him pay," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "They jumped on him pretty good when he made mistakes." One of Kluber's nemesis this year has been the home run ball. With a month still left in the season, he has already given up 22 home runs, matching his career high. Left-handers have hit 13 of the 22 home runs Kluber has allowed, including one by lefty-swinging Lucas Duda in the Kansas City start."I left a couple fastballs in the middle of the plate that they hit," Kluber said of the start vs. the Royals. "Some pitches I felt like I executed them pretty well, but they put them in play and found some holes, so you tip your cap. It wasn't perfect by any means. It was one of those days that I felt could have gone better, but it is what it is." Kluber's start Friday will be his first against Tampa Bay since Aug. 13, 2017, when he beat the Rays 11-3, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs and four hits, with nine strikeouts and two walks. In eight career starts against Tampa Bay, Kluber is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA.Kluber's mound opponent will be right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who will make his first career appearance against Cleveland. Glasnow is a combined 1-3 with a 4.18 ERA for Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. He was part of the July 31 trade between the Rays and Pirates in which pitcher Chris Archer was traded to Pittsburgh.Glasnow has appeared in 39 games, five of them starts. He was 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA in 34 relief appearances with the Pirates, and he is 0-1 with a 3.80 ERA in five starts for Tampa Bay.In his last start for the Rays, Glasnow received no decision in Tampa Bay's 4-3 win over Kansas City on Aug. 23. MLB Game Preview: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - Date: 8/31/2018 StubHubStubHubRyu, not Kershaw, goes for Dodgers against Diamondbacks 9m ago. 2 min read LOS ANGELES - The marquee matchup of a weekend duel for first place was supposed to take place Friday before the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled a late switch and nixed a battle of aces. The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw no longer will match up with the Arizona Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke in the second game of the four-game series at Dodger Stadium as fellow left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu will take his place for the Dodgers Friday night. It wasn't that the Dodgers wanted to spread the pitching wealth around the series. In moving Kershaw to Saturday's game against Arizona, it will give him an extra day of rest with a month left in the season, but primarily it lines up his next outing against another National League West title contender in the Colorado Rockies."Ev ery game is very difficult, but when you're playing a division rival, that essentially counts as two games," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "To have the guys that you want in a particular matchup, that's what we feel comfortable with." The Dodgers lost to the Diamondbacks 3-1 on Thursday night to fall two games behind first-place Arizona in the division, while essentially putting more emphasis on Ryu's start Friday.Greinke is still the Friday starter for Arizona. His August was not as good as his brilliant July, but he still arrives at his former home park with a 2.19 ERA over his last 10 starts going back to the beginning of July. His worst outing in that bunch came Aug. 13 when he gave up four runs over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Texas Rangers. But in his last outing Sunday against the contending Seattle Mariners, Greinke (13-8, 2.93 ERA) went 6 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run and picked up h is first victory since July 27.He is 6-4 lifetime against the Dodgers with a 3.84 ERA over 13 starts. Profitable Handicappers. This season Greinke is 2-0 with a 4.38 ERA in two starts against Los Angeles.Greinke is well aware that Arizona still has two series remaining against the Dodgers, counting this one, as well as two series against the Rockies. In three starts since coming off the disabled list because of a strained left groin, Ryu (4-1, 2.18 ) has been impressive. In recent starts against the Giants, Cardinals and Padres he has a combined 2.30 ERA over 15 2/3 innings.Ryu is 3-3 with a 3.90 ERA in 12 career starts against the Diamondbacks, and he is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts against them this season.Ryu has yet to throw more than 89 pitches in a start during his comeback, though, and the Dodgers could be forced to make an early call to a bullpen that has been a wild ride of late.Dodgers relievers struggled when closer Kenley Jansen was on the disabled list for 10 days in August with an irregular heartbeat. Jansen has struggled in four outings since he has returned, but the rest of the relievers have been better and the Dodgers just got right-hander Josh Fields back from a DL stint of his own because of right shoulder inflammation.

MLB Game Preview: New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants - Date: 8/31/2018 StubHubStubHubGiants try to keep playoff hopes up in series with Mets 4h ago. 2 min read SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants lost another player and the New York Mets took a step toward getting one back as the clubs prepared for a three-game series that begins Friday night with one still clinging to a sliver of playoff hope. The Giants (67-68) began Thursday -- an off day for both teams -- seven games back in the National League West and 7 1/2 behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild-card spot, then fell another half-game back of the Brewers (75-60) after Milwaukee beat the Cincinnati Reds in an afternoon affair.Meanwhile, the Giants learned they'd also lost center fielder Steven Duggar, their hottest hitter of late, for the rest of the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder."The timing is awful," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Duggar, who provided difference-making hits in wins over Texas on Sunday and Arizona on Monday. "He was really in a good place." The three games against the Mets, the fourth-place team in the NL East, provide a short break from a heavyweight-laden September schedule in which the Giants will go up against teams ahead of them in the standings -- Colorado, Milwaukee, Atlanta and Colorado again -- for 12 straight games starting Monday. The Mets have done a good job playing spoiler while encountering a rough patch of their own schedule. Soccer Tipsters. They split four games against the Giants last week in New York as part of an 8-7 run against Philadelphia (3-2), San Francisco (2-2), Washington (2-1) and the Chicago Cubs (1-2).In the meantime, the Mets have been trying to get their own house in order, sending former All-Star third baseman David Wright to the minors in his bid to play this season despite recent neck, back and shoulder surgeries.Wright, who went 1-for-9 in two games for Triple-A Las Vegas this week, has rejoined the parent club in San Francisco, but solely to continue rehab for the time being."We just haven't seen that level of consistency of playing on a quantity or quality at this point," Mets interim general manager John Ricco said this week, indicating that reinstating Wright to the major-league roster -- even as they expand Saturday -- was no sure thing."Quite frankly as this point," Ricco continued, "he hasn't been able to make some of the benchmarks that were laid out for him (as he began his rehab stint)." Wright hasn't played in a major-league game since May 2016.Zack Wheeler (9-6, 3.46 ERA), dealt from the Giants to the Mets for Carlos Beltran in 2011, will make his third career start in San Francisco since the trade. He's 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA in the first two.The former No. 6 overall pick of the 2009 draft by t he Giants has lived up to the early projections since the All-Star break, a stretch during which he has the second-best ERA in the NL (1.17) in seven starts. He's 2-1 with a 3.45 ERA in five lifetime starts against the Giants.Rookie left-hander Andrew Suarez (5-9, 4.42), coming off seven shutout innings in a 5-3 win over Texas last Saturday, is scheduled to open the series for the Giants. He has never faced the Mets.

"That's no excuse, but I saw a little (fatigue) today. Just one of those tough nights." Leake (8-8, 4.03 ERA) has faced the A's three times this season, with the Mariners winning all three, 7-4, 3-2 and 2-0. He did not get a decision in any of the wins despite allowing a total of just five runs a nd 15 hits in 20 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old has a 1-1 record and 2.50 ERA in six career starts against the A's.Leake has been especially tough this season on A's All-Star Jed Lowrie, holding him hitless in nine at-bats with two strikeouts.Oakland will pitch a veteran right-hander of its own, Mike Fiers (10-6, 3.15), who will be looking to remain unbeaten for the A's in a fifth consecutive start since being acquired from Detroit.Fiers pitched Oakland to a 3-2 win at Seattle earlier this month, allowing two runs and six hits in six innings. It raised the 33-year-old's lifetime record in seven starts against the Mariners to 2-1 with a 5.66 ERA, marks that include a 7-2 loss in May as a member of the Tigers.Jean Segura and Ben Gamel both homered off Fiers in that game.Segura was scratched from Thursday's starting lineup because of a bruised left shin suffered when he fouled a pitch off his leg Wednesday in San Diego. He is expected to return sometime during t he remainder of the series.Robinson Cano has been tough on Fiers in the past, going 5-for-14 (.357) with a double and two home runs.

With its 5-0 blanking of the Pittsburgh Pirates, it remained atop the National League wild-card race and stayed within 4 1/2 games of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cardinals, whose 21 wins in August are their most in a month since August of 2004, will try for a 22nd victory to end the month Friday night when they open a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds in Busch Stadium."It's just the byproduct of daily consistency and focus," Shildt said. "You'r e seeing guys with a competitive spirit and they're bringing it every day. It's clearly not easy to win games, but the guys are committed on a daily basis." At 75-59, St. Louis is 28-13 under Shildt. His first game was July 15, a 6-4 win over Cincinnati, and the last series it lost under his command was in late July against the Reds. Those Reds were playing good baseball at the time, winning against good teams and making a case for interim manager Jim Riggleman to become the permanent skipper. But in his career, Bailey is 6-14 with a 5.57 ERA in 26 starts, throwing 22 home run balls in just 140 2/3 innings. The Cardinals counter with rookie le ft-hander Austin Gomber (4-0, 2.79), who has permitted only four runs in his last four starts, covering 22 innings. Gomber checked Colorado on five hits and two runs over six innings Sunday in a 12-3 romp at Coors Field, walking one and whiffing six.In his first career start on July 24, Gomber took a no-hitter into the seventh against the Reds before losing it and ultimately being no-decisioned in a 4-2 St. Louis win.

MLB Game Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves - Date: 8/31/2018 StubHubStubHubBraves look to do better at home vs. Pirates 3h ago. 2 min read ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves swept a three-game series in Pittsburgh last week, holding the Pirates to two total runs. The Braves, though, scored only nine runs themselves, and two of the victories were by one run.The teams meet in a three-game series at Atlanta's SunTrust Park beginning Friday night with the Braves trying to hold off Philadelphia in the National League East and the Pirates no longer in playoff contention.Anibal Sanchez (6-5, 3.05 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Braves in the series opener, with fellow right-hander Jameson Taillon (10-9, 3.49) set to get the starting assignment for the Pirates. The Braves (74-59) saw their lead in the NL East cut to three games over the idle Phillies with a 5-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs in a makeup game Thursday night. It wa s the Braves' sixth loss in their past seven home games and left them just 35-30 at SunTrust Park compared to 39-29 away from Atlanta. After losing two of three in St. Louis, the Pirates (65-69) are 12-20 since putting together an 11-game winning streak in July that kindled playoff hopes for the NL Central team.Taillon, who is in his third major-league season, has never faced the Braves, and it has been two years since 13-year veteran Sanchez faced the Pirates, against whom he is 3-5 with a 3.62 ERA in eight career starts.Sanchez, 34, lost his two most recent starts, but allowed just nine hits and four runs over 12 1/3 innings against the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins. After allowing two hits over five scoreless innings at Miami on Saturday, Sanchez allowed a run in the sixth that put the Braves behind for good. He then left the game with two outs in the sixth with what the Braves termed right hamstring tightness."He didn't pop it, didn't pull it, it was more I think probably a dehydration thing," Braves manager Brian Snitker said afterward.Sanchez has had no lingering issues with the hamstring, although the injury did throw him off against the Marlins."In the last hitters, I started thinking I can push my body and that's why I lost my command," Sanchez said.Taillon, 26, hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start since May 22 and has a 2.95 ERA in the 16 starts since then.Taillon gave up one run in a victory over Milwaukee in his most recent outing on Saturday, going at least six innings for the sixth straight time and the eighth time in his past nine starts."I knew the team needed innings," Taillon said after beating the Brewers. "I enjoy that feeling. When the team needs me, that kind of sparks some extra energy." Taillon has been especially tough on the road of late, going 6-2 with a 2.44 ERA in his last nine outings away from Pittsburgh.Pittsburgh is 9-18 against the NL East. Atlanta is 15-11 versus the NL Central.
