NCAAF Game Recap: Utah (3) vs. Washington (10) - 11/30/2018

NCAAF Game Recap: Utah (3) vs. Washington (10) - Date: 11/30/2018 Nov 30, 2018SANTA CLARA, Calif. Byron Murphy returned a deflected interception 66 yards for the game's only touchdown to lead No. 10 Washington to a 10-3 victory over No. 17 Utah in an offensively challenged Pac-12 championship game Friday night. In a matchup of the two stingiest defenses in the conference, neither offense could get much of anything going at all. So it was only fitting that a dropped pass by Utah (9-4, No. 17 CFP) led to an interception for Washington (10-3, No. 11 CFP) and the only touchdown. Both teams had been held to just one field goal when the Huskies broke through late in the third quarter. Jason Shelley's pass hit Siaosi Mariner in the hands inside the Washington 35. But Mariner couldn't hold onto the pass and it ricocheted off his leg and into the hands of Murphy, who raced 66 yards for the score that made it 10-3. Jord an Miller intercepted another pass from Shelley on the following drive and Murphy got his second interception of the game the next time Utah had the ball. The Huskies sealed the victory with a fourth-down stop in the final minute to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. Best Free Sports Picks. The Huskies had four drives of at least 10 plays but got only one field goal out of those. They were stopped on a fourth-and-6 from the Utah 23 on the opening drive, threw an interception in Utah territory on the third drive and had a field goal blocked in the fourth quarter. Handicapper Return on Investment. The one score came on Peyton Henry's 29-yard field goal late in the first half. That was enough to give Washington a 3-0 lead at the break but the Utes tied it with a score on the opening possession of the third quarter when Matt Gay's 53-yard field goal jus t cleared the cross bar. Professional Handicappers. THE TAKEAWAYUtah: The Utes made it to the title game despite losing quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss to injuries in a four-day span in early November. Shelley and Armand Shyne stepped in and let the Utes to three straight wins and a spot in this game but they weren't good enough against the Huskies. Shelley's three interceptions were his first turnovers as a starter. He threw for just 137 yards. Shyne ran for 37 yards on 11 carries. Washington: The Huskies came into the season with playoff hopes but a season-opening loss to Auburn and then a pair of losses to Oregon and California in October ended that quest. But Washington still managed to win the conference and will go to the Rose Bowl for the first time since the 2000 season. UP NEXTUtah: Bowl game to be determined. Sports Tipsters. The Grizzlies never trailed again.Marc Gasol had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who snapped a three-game losing streak.DeMarre Carroll had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Nets, whose losing streak hit five games. The Nets broke away from a tightly contested game in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter after the teams traded leads for most of the first three periods.Former Nets player Marshawn Brooks gave Memphis am 87-80 lead to start the fourth before Brooklyn's defense tightened and its offense took off with a 14-0 run, capped by DeMarre Carroll's putback layup with 8:00 remaining in the game. After Gasol traveled and then missed an easy shot to the right side of the rim, Spencer Dinwiddie gave the Nets their biggest lead of the game with a 3-pointer from the left co rner that made it 102-92.Memphis cut the lead 109-104 on Garrett Temple's basket before Dinwiddie's layup made it 111-104.Jackson then connected on a four-point play after he was fouled on a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left.Jackson then took advantage of a botched inbounds play by Brooklyn when Russell lost control of the ball, and followed up by hitting a 3 from the left wing.TIP-INSGrizzlies: Memphis had lost its last three games to the Nets.Nets: G Joe Harris was held out of Friday night's game due to tightness in his left adductor.WELCOMED ADDITIONMemphis coach J. B. Free Sport Pick. The Heat led by 31 points in the second quarter, then saw the lead cut to three in the final moments before escaping.Anthony Davis finished with 41 points for the Pelicans, who got 21 from Jrue Holiday and 15 from Nikola Mirotic. Sports Handicapping Service Units Gained. The Heat held a massive 49-12 edge in bench scoring, led by Wade.He had a drive with 1:23 left to get the lead up to 103-97, and Richardson's driving basket with 26.1 seconds remaining all but sealed the much-needed win for Miami.Miami entered on a six-game losing streak, and decided to make a key change in an effort to turn things around - the black ''Vice'' uniforms, whose unveiling coincided with the start of the home slide, were ditched in a decision that was made shortly before game time. Documented Handicappers. The Heat donned their red uniforms instead, calling the switch ''an organizational decision.'' Plus, as part of the tributes around the NBA this week to the late broadcaster Craig Sager and his most unique sense of fashion, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and his assistants wore their outlandish best. Spoelstra wore a blue and white plaid coat, assistant Dan Craig went with a leathery look and Juwan Howard wore sneakers that loosely resembled the sort of colorful jackets Sager made famous. The Heat led by 20 after one q uarter - their biggest lead at home through 12 minutes since Jan. 30, 2007. By the midpoint of the second quarter, the lead was a season-high 31. Richardson had 14 points, Wade had 11, the Pelicans had missed all 11 of their 3-point attempts and Miami was up 52-21.Richardson's 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the half pushed Miami's lead to 59-28.And then things got interesting, quickly.New Orleans needed only 97 seconds for a 12-0 run that cut the deficit to 19, and the Pelicans went into the locker room down 61-41. Davis then scored the Pelicans' first 11 points of the second half with a jumper, two 3-pointer and three free throws after getting fouled on a 3 to get his team within 65-52.E'Twaun Moore left with 1:34 left with what appeared to be a left knee injury, and was unable to put any weight on that leg as he was helped to the locker room.TIP-INSPelicans: New Orleans is 9-2 at home, yet only 2-10 on the road. ... Davis hadn't scored more than 33 points in a road game this season. He's reached 40 or more twice at home. This also marked the most he's scored in any of his six appearances in Miami since joining the NBA; before Friday, his high on the Heat home floor was 29, set on Christmas 2015.Heat: Friday started a stretch in which Miami will play nine out of 10 games against Western Conference teams. ... The game marked Miami's 390th consecutive home sellout, tying the Phoenix Suns (1990-99) for the seventh-longest in NBA history. ... Whiteside now has at least one blocked shot in 22 straight games, the fourth-longest such streak of his career.HEAT INJURIESMiami's injury situation is getting worse, not better. The Heat are up to 62 games missed by eight different players because of injuries - Goran Dragic is still out with his right knee injury, Tyler Johnson sat again with his right hamstring strain, Dion Waiters hasn't played this season while he recovers from ankle surgery and Derrick Jones Jr. is no w out with a right hamstring strain.COMEBACK TRYThe Pelicans failed in their bid for history. The largest halftime deficit ever overcome in franchise history was 19 - they were the New Orleans Hornets then - at Memphis on Jan. 30, 2010. When trailing by 20 or more, New Orleans is now 0-38. Wilson scored his seventh goal in nine games since coming back from a lengthy suspension, extending his career-best goal streak to five games and point streak to seven. Sports Handicapper Leads. The short-handed goal gives Wilson 13 points, but a hit on New Jersey's Brett Seney late in the second period put him back in the spotlight for the wrong reason. After Seney released the puck and it had gone into the corner late in the second period, Wilson skated up from behind and hit him with his left shoulder. Wilson, who was given a 20-game suspension that was reduced to 14 for an illegal check to the head in the preseason finale, could avoid being suspended this time. After review, he did not make principal contact to Seney's head, it did not look like a predatory play and the Devils forward returned at the start of the third. Backstrom had a hat trick for the first time since Dec. 13, 2014, and added an assist for a four-point game. Andre Burakovsky also scored for Washington, which got 33 saves from Braden Holtby, including two on breakaways by Seney and another on former Capitals forward Marcus Johansson. Pitt has won 17 of the last 18 meetings.Pitt took advantage of its size and athleticism to blow past Duquesne in the closing minutes. Duquesne pulled within 51-45 on an Austin Rotroff layup with 9:11 remaining but the Panthers reeled off the next 15 points capped by an Ellison dunk with 2:08 to go.Michael Hughes led the Dukes with 20 points but Duquesne couldn't keep up after the Panthers found their footing in the second half. Pitt outrebounded the Dukes 42-33, outscored them on the fast break 16-2 and had little trouble getting the shots it wanted late. The 87th meeting between the schools located just two miles apart had a decidedly new feel. Handicapper Directory. The Panthers are in the midst of a massive rebuild under first-year head coach Jeff Capel, one that appeared to take its first significant step forward in a one-point loss to No. 14 Iowa on Tuesday. Duquesne, meanwhile, has 11 players in the first season with the program and just one - Lewis - leftover from the team that knocked off the Panthers two years ago, a victory that marked just the Dukes' fourth win in the series since 1982Second-year Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot stressed coming in that the Dukes can no longer afford to be pushovers to the Panthers in a rivalry that at times seems to be built more on location and habit than legitimate te nsion. The Dukes made their first four shots before the game devolved into the typical grind-it-out affair that has become the norm. Pitt slowly recovered to take a 32-29 lead after a half that featured more fouls (22) than made field goals (20).THE TAKEAWAYDuquesne: The Dukes are on the upswing but with so many new faces, it's going to take time to jell. Another chance at taking down an in-state Power Five conference opponent awaits when Duquesne plays Penn State on Dec. 19.Pitt: The Panthers might be growing up more rapidly than Capel thought. Just 72 hours removed from an emotional loss in a difficult environment, Pitt responded emphatically when pushed by the Dukes.UP NEXTDuquesne: Welcomes Marshall next Wednesday.Pitt: Hosts Niagara on Monday.

NFL Game Preview: New York Jets vs. Tennessee Titans - 12/2/2018 - 4:05 PM EST

NFL Game Preview: New York Jets vs. Tennessee Titans - Date: 12/2/2018 Nov 30, 2018At the bottom of a logjam of AFC teams that are either 6-5 or 5-6, the Tennessee Titans have virtually no margin for error with five games remaining on their schedule. In order to make the playoffs, the Titans (5-6) would probably have to run the table with what is one of the weakest remaining schedules in the league, including Sunday's matchup vs. the 3-8 New York Jets in Nashville, Tenn. Linebacker Brian Orakpo didn't mince words, saying that the Titans have to have the mindset of winning all five games in order to find the postseason. "Absolutely. I'm not even looking at four of the next five," Orakpo said. "We need to look at winning all the rest. We have five games. We have to start being realistic about ourselves and stop all that BS answers when it comes to the scenarios. To give ourselves a chance, 10-6 looks pretty good to me, and we have to make sure that's a reality and not just some talk. It starts with the Jets this week. It means absolutely nothing if we don't get back to the basics and start with these Jets. " "These Jets" are currently on a five-game skid and are one of three teams that could be starting a backup quarterback this week. Of late, the Jets have been starting backup Josh McCown as rookie Sam Darnold has been out with a foot injury. Both were limited on Wednesday, but either way, the Titans should have an advantage entering Sunday's game. Profitable Sports Handicappers. The Jets are a month away from missing the playoffs for an eighth straight season and possibly searching for a new head coach as the criticism intensifies on fourth-year boss Todd Bowles. Darnold is injured and trying to lobby his way back into the lineup after being limited in practice on Wednesday. It was not so long ago that the Jets scored a deceiving 42 points on the Indianapolis Colts, misleading only because half of those points came via the foot of rookie kicker Jason Myers, who made seven field goals. Since then, the offense has cratered considerably even before Darnold's foot landed in a walking boot. Darnold was struggling with half of his 14 interceptions in the losses to Minnesota, Chicago and Miami that followed the win over Indianapolis. During their skid, the Jets are averaging 11. 2 points with one touchdown or fewer in the last four games since tight end Chris Herndon and Darnold reached the end zone in the Minnesota loss. "I can't speak for the room. I think for myself, I'm frustrated. It's frustrating," wide receiver Quincy Enunwa said. "You put your all in this game and the results don't come out the way you want them to, but I still believe in my brothers, still believe in the guys, there's no reason not to. We fight, that's something I'm proud of them for. I wish we all collectively did a better job of finishing those games and executing the game plan. " Things haven't exactly been rosy for the Titans either. Two blowout losses in the AFC South to the Colts and Texans on the road have all but ended their division title hopes. The defense, which had been the team's anchor much of the season, broke down in both games as the Titans were outscored a collective 72-27. "The past two weeks we haven't been ourselves. Everybody just has to play better. I'm speaking mostly about defense," Orakpo said. "The past two weeks have not met our standard. That's something we have to address. We all have to play at a higher standard, and we will do that this week. We will get back to the basics, because honestly when you look at it, and when we watch film and break it down as a group, we literally are beating ourselves. I know it sounds c liche, but honestly we are just doing things that are not ourselves that we were not doing earlier in the season. " Back to the basics, means sound assignment football. Orakpo says the Titans have been trying too hard to make a big play -- the Titans haven't forced a turnover in three weeks -- and that has caused mistakes like being out of position and missing tackles in the process. "I just feel like we're trying to do too much. In the game, the momentum is going, and now is the time where we want to make plays to benefit our team, and guys are just trying to go out there and do things to make that big play, get that big turnover, and sometimes we get kind of misaligned, or miss our gap or miss our read. And that's what happens with the gashes," he said. "We just need to get back to the basics. We need to trust all 11, all 10 guys that are out there plus yourself. And that goes for myself included. We all want to make that big play and do something that is best for our team, and we've just got to trust our teammates like we'd been doing the previous games and previous weeks when we were pretty consistent. This past two weeks has not been our standard. "

NFL Game Preview: Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins - 12/2/2018 - 1:00 PM EST

NFL Game Preview: Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins - Date: 12/2/2018 Nov 30, 2018The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins are heading in opposite directions as they approach Sunday's game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Documented Handicappers. The Bills (4-7) have suddenly come alive with back-to-back victories over the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, while the Dolphins (5-6) have lost six of eight since a 3-0 start. Miami head coach Adam Gase is particularly distressed about consecutive defeats to the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts, blowing a 24-10 lead, that have put the Dolphins' playoff hopes in jeopardy. "You're disappointed because you've got two games where you're sitting there going, 'Well, 5-6, or 7-4,'" Gase told reporters early this week. "So, it's a (crappy) feelin g. "We're getting turnovers. It's a shame. We're in the plus, we block a punt, do all those type of things and then don't come out with a win (against the Colts). We'll . . . correct what we need to correct, and try and figure out a way to win a game. " While the Dolphins will be favored at home, getting past the Bills might not be as easy as some would think. Even though Miami has had its way with Buffalo over the years, leading the all-time regular-season series by 59-44-1, the Bills swept both games last season - winning the season finale on New Years Eve in Miami to make the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. Buffalo has won seven of the last 10 games against Miami. Hockey Predictions. The Bills have turned things around in their two more recent games by getting the ball into the end zone eight times, equaling the number of touchdowns they scored in the first ni ne games, while scoring a total of 65 points. "There's things that obviously we've done better," said offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who added that those things won't automatically carry over to this week against the Dolphins. "You've got to do a good job each week. Each week is a new week of coming in here . . . I've got a lot of respect for the guys in the room that we work with and continually grinding it out, worrying about one week at a time, taking care of the opponent. Really, it comes down to execution between the white lines of throwing, catching, protecting, blocking, playing fast, doing the right things. One week has no bearing on the next. " The Bills probably will need to get more out of rookie quarterback Josh Allen, who completed only 8 of 19 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville, and he might be able to do that because Miami ranks 29th in the league on total defense. Allen, returning from an elbow injury, did his best work against the Jaguars with his legs, running for 99 yards. Buffalo also needs to get running back LeSean McCoy going, because he has only 426 yards rushing and a 3. 3-yard average this season. Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill also was returning from an injury (shoulder) last week and completed 17 of 25 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns). However, Gase took the ball out of his hands as the Dolphins tried to run the ball and the clock with little success in the fourth quarter, allowing quarterback Andrew Luck to bring the Colts from behind. With a 24-17 lead, Miami had two possessions in the fourth quarter and went three-and-out twice, with minus-one yard on six plays while running only 2:30 off the clock. Leading Handicappers. Twice Gase elected to run the ball on third-and-10 instead of having a frustrated Tannehill throw. Given time, Luck threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to tigh t end Eric Ebron and then set up Adam Vinatieri's winning 32-yard field goal with a 34-yard completion to wide receiver Chester Rogers. Gase defended the play-calling in the fourth quarter because of a lack of field position, but Tannehill obviously wasn't happy about it when answering questions about it after the game. "I totally understand the call there, but as a competitor, it's tough," the quarterback said. "You want the ball in your hands. "The way it went down really hurts. We have to get past it. There are still five football games in front of us and everything is still on the table. But this hurts . . . an AFC game, on the road, in good position to win and to not finish it . . . it hurts. " Perhaps the biggest challenge for the Dolphins is getting their coach and quarterback on the same page.

NBA Game Preview: Orlando Magic vs. Phoenix Suns - 11/30/2018 - 9:08 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: Orlando Magic vs. Phoenix Suns - Date: 11/30/2018 Nov 30, 2018PHOENIX -- Portland sank enough 3-pointers to sink Orlando on Wednesday.Phoenix, meanwhile, has sunk to new depths. The Suns billed this season as a "time to rise" after taking center Deandre Ayton with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft, but they are off to the worst start in the 51-season history of the franchise and will bring a 4-17 record into a game against Orlando on Friday. The Magic (10-12) have lost four of five and will be playing the fifth game of a six-game road trip, one of two six-game trips this season, both before mid-January.While the Blazers made a franchise-record 19 threes in handing the Magic a 115-112 loss, the Suns played their first game with Devin Booker as the starting point guard in a 115-99 loss at the Clippers on Wednesday, although position roles are not as clearly delineated in coach Igor Kokoskov's flowing off ense that stresses ball movement. The Suns waived nominal point starter Isaiah Canaan before the game, and they also have used veteran Jamal Crawford more down the stretch as a facilitator/scorer in the last two weeks."I just look at it as a playmaker," Booker told reporters. "I'm fine with it. Whatever they have me doing, I'll do." The move also will give the Suns a chance to take a longer look at rookie point guard Elie Okobo, who was the first player taken in the second round of the 2018 draft and has been back and forth between the Suns and G League affiliate Northern Arizona this year.Okobo scored a career-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in a career-high 32 minutes against the Clippers, one of the bright spots for a team that was outrebounded 56-34 and gave up a 20-4 run in the third quarter that went a long way toward determining the outcome."It's good to get back on the court and try to help my teammates," Okobo told reporte rs.The Clippers, like some recent opponents, attacked the Suns at the basket, and their physical play behind 7-foot-3 Doban Marjanovic and 6-8 Montrezl Harrell led to 18 offensive rebounds.Suns 7-foot rookie center Deandre Ayton had only four field goal attempts and finished with a career-low four points and five fouls."I felt like I played like a rookie," Ayton told the Arizona Republic. "I really got thrown off by the big dude, I'm not going to lie." Slow starts have marked the Suns' recent history as the team has attempted to build through draft picks, the best of whom has been Booker, who is averaging 24.5 points and 7.0 assists per game. He has had a career-high 12 assists twice in the last two weeks, a function of teams double-teaming him to take the ball out of his hands. The Suns are 25-59 through the first 21 games in the last four years.Orlando has lost four of five against a schedule that has included road games in Denver and Golden Stat e and a home game against Toronto. The Magic played without Aaron Gordon in Portland, out with a sore lower back. Gordon, averaging 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds a game, was removed from the Golden State game on Monday with back spasms. He is considered questionable for Friday's game.Jonathan Isaac had 16 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes while starting for Gordon in Portland, and Nikola Vucevic had 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists."It's extremely frustrating," Isaac told reporters in Portland regarding the recent string of losses."We have to win these games. Track Handicappers. That's the bottom line. We haven't been able to execute down the stretch, and that's something we are going to have to do if we want to be a serious team at the end of the year." The Magic lost by six points to the Warriors and suffered a two-point loss in Toronto on Nov. 20, the final home game before their trip."We've got to get better," coach Steve Clifford told reporters in Portland. "C'mon. You play that offensive game against that (Blazers) team ... you gotta win that game." Vucevic, averaging 20.8 points and 11.1 rebounds, is one of five players averaging at least 20/11, joining Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Inside Info. The Capitals (14-7-3) could get boost Friday with the return of forward Evgeny Kuznetsov, who missed the last six games with a concussion. Kuznetsov was Washington's leading scorer (nine goals, five assists in 18 games) at the time of his injury. He was a full participant in Thursday's practice." Yeah, we're hoping," Capitals coach Todd Reirden said after Thursday's practice. "He has not been cleared yet so today was the first step in him going through a little bit more than just a random skate around. Handicapper Return on Investment. Today was going through some more drills and that's the natural progression. It was nice to see him back out there." Forward T. J. Oshie, who got a concussion in the same game as Kuznetsov, has yet to resume skating. Alex Ovechkin missed Thursday's practice, gut the team said it was a maintenance day for an upper body injury and Reirden expects him to play. Top Rated Sports Services. The Capitals have outscored teams 24-13 during their winning streak. One reason is their improved penalty kill. After allowing at least on power play goal in 15 of their first 20 games, the Capitals have allowed none in their last four, killing off 13 straight penalties." We knew we were on the cusp of doing some good things and were kind of ending up o n the wrong side of some bounces and some plays ending up in our net," Reirden told the Washington Post. "It's still not perfect by any means, but at least we're headed in the right direction." The Devils may have an addition to their lineup Friday night. The team called up Michael McLeod, their 2016 first-round draft pick. He began his pro career in the AHL in 2018-19 and would be making his NHL debut. McLeod had three goals and seven assists in 21 games with Binghamton this season." He's a fast, tenacious player and adds size to our lineup. He's very competitive," Devils coach John Hynes told the Newark Star Ledger. "That's something we've talked about wanting more from our forward group, is guys that are harder to play against. He adds kind of both, the speed element and some more size. Hopefully he comes in and takes someone's job." In addition, the Devils may get forward Marcus Johansson back against his former team. Johansson, who has three goals and five assists, missed the Devils' 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday due to a lower body injury. The Devils placed forward Jean-Sebastien Dea on waivers and he was claimed by the Penguins. He was claimed off waivers from the Penguins before the season began and had three goals and two assists. With both teams off since Monday, the game should feature goalies Keith Kincaid of New Jersey and Braden Holtby. Kincaid is 3-3 with a 3.24 goals-against average (GAA) and .882 save percentage against the Capitals, while Holtby is 15-3-3 with a 1.98 GAA and a .925 save percentage versus the Devils.

NBA Game Preview: Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs - Date: 11/30/2018 Nov 29, 2018You probably could have gotten pretty good odds at the start of the NBA season if you had bet that both San Antonio and Houston, two of the league's powerhouse teams, would be under. 500 a quarter of the way through the 2018-19 campaign. The surprisingly disappointing start will be one of the storylines when the Rockets (9-11) head to the Alamo City to battle the Spurs (10-11) on Friday at the AT&T Center.Houston comes into the latest Lone Star State showdown on the heels of a 128-108 home loss to Dallas on Wednesday. We've got a lot of new guys, and it's only 20 games into the season." Both Paul and Green are expected to play on Friday. The Spurs return home after a 128-89 loss in Minnesota on Wednesday that forced them to be satisfied with a 2 -2 split on a four-game road trip to Indiana, Milwaukee, Chicago and the Twin Cities.San Antonio faded in a dismal second quarter in which it missed eight of its first nine shots and was outscored 29-9. Sports Handicapping Software. The Timberwolves kept the pedal to the metal in the third quarter, taking a 91-58 lead, and cruised to the win with both teams' starters on the bench for the final period.San Antonio was led by Jakob Poeltl's 14 points off the bench in the loss, while Quincy Pondexter added 13 points, Marco Belinelli racked up 11, and LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan scored 10 points each for the Spurs. The Spurs continue to struggle. Basketball Predictions. They are 4-9 in their past 13 games and are below .500 for the third time this season. It's the first time San Antonio is below the break-even mark through 21 games since the 2003-04 campaign. The Spurs are without consecutive victories since winning four straight games from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3.It's been a tough season for San Antonio, which traded away Kawhi Leonard in the spring, saw veteran point guard Tony Parker sign as a free agent in Charlotte, and then suffered the retirement of heart-and-soul guard Manu Ginobili. Then, in the preseason, presumptive starting point guard Dejounte Murray was lost for the season to a knee injury, basically forcing San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich to start over with his team."This is basically a new basketball team with a lot of guys who had never played together," Popovich said. "It was more about not skipping steps and kind of going back to the beginning where in the past there was so much corporate knowledge, you'd start the season running, everybody knowing their roles and their jobs."With this group, we had to begin with a lot more fundamental work, and the basics of wh at the system is, and then give them time to work together and learn about each other." So far, the Spurs have been inconsistent, at best.

"I'm nowhere near happy with (our defense). You can see the trend. Top Rated Sports Handicappers. Things don't happen overnight. You can see it. You can start feeling it. It tickles you a little bit, but you think, 'Maybe it's just me.' I'm pretty demanding when it comes to defense and I'm the guy behind, so I see a lot of things. While the Grizzlies are not consistently defending in the last three games, Gasol is consistently producing. He scored 27 points for the third straight game and is shooting 48.4 percent (31-of-64).Gasol, however, also tweaked his ankle Tuesday and is a game-time decision for Friday after participating in practice Thursday. As for the Nets, they are hoping to avoid a third straight fourth-quarter fade. They were outscored 31-13 in the fourth and shot 2 of 17 in the final 12 minutes of Wednesday's 101-9 1 loss to the Utah Jazz and it occurred three days after the Nets were outscored 38-23 in the final 12 minutes of a 127-125 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers."We just want to win," Nets center Jarrett Allen said. "We were up two games in the fourth quarter, so we just want to learn how to close." The Nets are on a five-game home losing streak and a four-game skid overall since allowing 15 points in the fourth quarter Nov. 20 in a 104-92 win at Miami.During its five-game home losing streak, the Nets are scoring 108.8 points but allowing 117.4 points on 49.7 percent shooting. "We did not move it when we needed to, so that's got to be a record for us, 11 assists -- that's just not good enough." Another problem for the Nets is being able to contain opposing starting centers. On Wednesday, Utah's Rudy Gobert totaled 23 points and 16 rebounds while shooting 10 of 14 and it occurred after Joel Embiid torched the Nets for 32 points. Opposing starting centers are averaging 17.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and have recorded a double-double 14 times.Last year, Gasol scored 18 points on 6 of 17 shooting in his lone appearance against the Nets. For his career, Gasol is averaging 15.6 points and 7.8 rebounds in 16 g ames against Brooklyn.
