NFL Game Recap: San Francisco 49ers (28) vs. Arizona Cardinals (25) - 10/31/2019

NFL Game Recap: San Francisco 49ers (28) vs. Arizona Cardinals (25) - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 31, 2019GLENDALE, Ariz. Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers reached the halfway point of their season undefeated, beating the Arizona Cardinals 28-25 on Thursday night. San Francisco (8-0) fell behind 7-0, but responded with three touchdowns - one as time expired in the second quarter after Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury called a timeout and gave the 49ers a second chance on fourth down - to take a 21-7 halftime lead. Free Picks for Today. The 49ers were in control until about five minutes left in the fourth quarter, when Andy Isabella caught a short pass and sprinted for an 88-yard touchdown to help the Cardinals pull to 28-25. But the 49ers were able to run out the clock on their ensuing offensive drive to end Arizona's come back. San Francisco's Emmanuel Sanders caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Arizona (3-5-1) lost its second straight game. Rookie quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Sports Handicapper Leaderboard. The Cardinals came into the game without their top two running backs, David Johnson and Chase Edmonds, who were battling injuries. Kenyan Drake - who was acquired by the Cardinals on Monday in a trade with the Miami Dolphins - ran for 36s yard on the first play of the game and capped the opening drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. He finished with a team-high 110 yards rushing and 52 yards receiving. BAD TIMINGArizona looked as if was about to escape the first half trailing 14-7 after San Francisco's Jeff Wilson Jr. was stopped on fourth down just shy of the goal line with a few seconds remaining in the first half. But there was one major problem for the Cardinals: Ki ngsbury called a timeout just before the play began. Sports Handicapping Monitor. The 49ers converted on their second chance when Garoppolo hit Sanders for a 1-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 lead. ROAD WARRIORSSan Francisco's off to an 8-0 start for the second time in franchise history. The Niners won 10 straight games to start the 1990 season. This year's streak has included five road wins. The 49ers have three straight home games starting with the Seahawks on Nov. 11. KITTLE SCAREThe 49ers got a scare early when star tight end George Kittle left the game after taking a helmet to the knee. But the third-year star quickly returned and responded with a 30-yard touchdown catch late in the first quarter to tie it at 7. INJURIES49ers: Defensive lineman Arik Armstead left in the first quarter with a throat injury but returned to the game. . . . Linebacker Kwon Alexander had a chest injury in the second half and didn't return. Cardinals: Defensive lineman Clinton McDonald left with what a ''stinger'' in the third quarter. NCAAF Game Recap: West Virginia (14) vs. Baylor (17) - 10/31/2019

NCAAF Game Recap: West Virginia (14) vs. Baylor (17) - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 31, 2019WACO, Texas Charlie Brewer threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns and John Mayers kicked a go-ahead 36-yard field goal to help No. 12 Baylor win its 10th game in a row, 17-14 over West Virginia on Thursday night. Baseball Handicappers. The Bears (8-0, 5-0 Big 12), who two seasons ago won only one game, are the league's only undefeated team - and one of eight remaining among FBS teams. Mayers' kick with 10:19 left broke a 14-all tie and put Baylor ahead to stay after a 13-play drive that took more than 6 minutes off the clock on an often frustrating night offensively for the Bears. West Virginia (3-5, 1-4) had eight quarterback sacks. With second-and-goal from the 1 late in the second quarter, Baylor was stuffed for no gain on three consecutive plays and had to settle for a 7-0 h alftime lead. Still, the Bears avoided what happened last Saturday, when while they had an open date the Big 12's other three ranked teams that did play lost. That included Oklahoma's loss at Kansas State that left Baylor alone atop the conference standings. After R. J. Sneed botched a punt return that was recovered at the Baylor 34, West Virginia couldn't get a first down. Casey Legg kicked the ball through the uprights on a 43-yard field goal attempt, but the Mountaineers were penalized for delay of game and had to try again. Nose tackle Bravvion Roy blocked Legg's 48-yard attempt with 3 1/2 minutes left. Sports Handicapper Picks. The Mountaineers had two big plays for their touchdowns. George Campbell had an 83-yard catch-and-run from Austin Kendall on the first play after a punt, and Winston Wright went 95 yards for the Mountaineers' first kickoff return for a touchdown in five years. Wright's return was on the ensuing kick after Brewer's 21-yard TD pass to Denzel Mims, who opened the second half by fumbling at the end of a 30-yard reception on his first catch since taking a hard hit early in the game. Both teams had a starting safety ejected after targeting calls. Josh Norwood, the leading tackler for West Virginia and with four consecutive games of at least 10 tackles, was flagged after the hit on Mims late in the first quarter. Baylor's Chris Miller got penalized for a play against Kendall in the final minute before halftime. Miller is subject to an automatic one-game suspension because it was his third targeting penalty this season. Winning Sports Handicappers. THE TAKEAWAYWest Virginia: The Mountaineers have lost four Big 12 games in a row for first-year coach Neal Brown since opening conference play with a win at Kansas. The Big 12's worst offense again struggled to get a nything done. With first-and-goal at the 10 on their first drive after halftime, Kendall was still calling out signals when the snap whiffed by his head. Kendall fell down, running back Leddie Brown couldn't get the rolling ball before defensive end James Lynch finally corralled it at the 37. Baylor: The Bears have moved up 10 spots in the Top 25 since first getting ranked at the start of October. They may not have been their sharpest playing on a Thursday night for so many to see in a nationally televised game, but Brewer and Co. got another victory. UP NEXTWest Virginia is home Nov. 9 to play Texas Tech. Baylor travels less than 100 miles north on Interstate 35 to play at TCU on Nov. 9. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/tag/Collegefootball and http://www. twitter. com/-Top25

NHL Game Preview: Montreal Canadiens vs. Vegas Golden Knights - 10/31/2019 - 10:05 PM EST

NHL Game Preview: Montreal Canadiens vs. Vegas Golden Knights - Date: 10/31/2019 The Montreal Canadiens and the Golden Knights will celebrate Halloween playing in Las Vegas on Thursday night, but for Vegas coach Gerard Gallant, it will feel a little more like Christmas.Three key players -- defenseman Nate Schmidt, right wing Alex Tuch and backup goaltender Malcolm Subban -- are all expected to return from injuries, finally giving the Golden Knights the roster Gallant envisioned heading into the season.Schmidt, who was injured when he banged knees with San Jose's Logan Couture in Vegas' 4-1, season-opening win, led the team in average time on ice (21:57) and was ninth in scoring with nine goals and 21 assists in 2018-19 despite missing 20 games with a PED suspension.Tuch, out since sustaining an upper-body injury when he crashed into the boards in a Sept. 27 preseason game with the Los Angeles Kings, was fourth on the team in scoring last season with 20 goals and 32 assists.Subban, who went 8-10-2 with a 2.93 goals-against as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup, sustained a lower-body injury in an Oct. 10 game at Arizona and has played just one period this season."Fortunately, we've gotten off to a decent start," Gallant said. "Eight-and-five (8-5-0) isn't great, but it isn't bad. We got through it, so hopefully we can stay healthy now." All three players returned to practice on Monday, the morning after Vegas defeated the Anaheim Ducks 5-2. And although the team didn't officially activate them as of Wednesday, the Golden Knights did clear roster spots by assigning defensemen Jake Bischoff and Nicholas Hague, forward Nicolas Roy and goaltender Garret Sparks to Chicago of the AHL.The Golden Knights are expected to add the trio prior to the Thursday contest."I hope so, but they're not cleared yet," Gallant said with a smile after practice on Wednesday . "They skated today, they did really well today. Skate tomorrow, and when they tell me they're ready to go, the medical staff, then they'll be ready to go. As long as they clear them, I'll put them in the lineup." Schmidt, for one, was anxious to get back to action."Super awesome," he said when asked how it felt to be practicing with his team again. "Back with friends, it's really great. It is just good to feel back in the mix again." While the Golden Knights will be well-rested thanks to a three-day break, Montreal will be playing the second half of a back-to-back that started with a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night in Glendale, Ariz.Carey Price had 32 saves and Shea Weber had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who won their second straight game. Free Guaranteed Sports Picks. The victory kicked off a three-game western road trip for Montrea l that concludes on Saturday at Dallas."It's definitely a road trip where you don't want to get back in the standings," Jonathan Drouin, who scored the final goal in the Wednesday night win, told "You don't want to get lost down there. For us, these points are important." Montreal, which improved to 3-1-2 on the road this season, swept the two meetings with Vegas last season and is 3-1-0 all-time against the Golden Knights. Sports Monitor. The Canadiens have won both meetings in Las Vegas, including a 4-3 overtime win last December when Phillip Danault scored a hat trick and Paul Byron potted the game-winner.--Field Level Media

NBA Game Preview: Denver Nuggets vs. New Orleans Pelicans - 10/31/2019 - 9:35 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: Denver Nuggets vs. New Orleans Pelicans - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 30, 2019It's still early in the NBA season. That's what Denver guard Will Burton said after the Nuggets' first loss Tuesday night. It's also what the New Orleans Pelicans have been telling themselves after losing their first four games heading into a home matchup with the Nuggets on Thursday. After allowing an average of just 100.3 points in winning their first three games, the Nuggets gave up 60 in the first half and allowed nine players to score in double figures in a 109-106 home loss to Dallas."It's still really early in the season," Barton told the Denver Post. "We're still trying to figure things out. It just takes a little bit of time." Denver got off to slow starts offensively in its first three games, trailing at the end of the first quarter in each. But the defense kept the Nuggets in good position un til the offense came around. Then against the Mavericks, Denver started fine offensively, leading 31-27 after the first quarter and finishing with 61 first-half points. But it scored just 45 points in the second half, and its defense didn't hold up down the stretch."We never got defense into the game consistently enough," Nuggets coach Mike Malone said."We couldn't get stops when we needed (to)," forward Paul Millsap said. "(We had) too many layups, too many broken assignments. We just weren't disciplined enough." Denver hopes to finally play well offensively and defensively in the same game on Thursday after committing eight second-half turnovers against the Mavericks."(We need) a little bit more ball movement and a little bit more player movement," Millsap said. "We'll figure it out." It might take the Pelicans a while to figure out their issues after allowing an average of 128.3 points over their first four g ames.New Orleans was competitive in losing to the Raptors in overtime, and against the Mavericks and Rockets. But in Monday's home game against Golden State, it fell behind by 20 points in the second quarter and trailed by as many as 29 in a 134-123 loss."You look at the game, and you look at the score and you think, 'oh, it ended up being an 11-point game," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. "We were never in the game. We never had any chance at all to win, and I think that's the most disturbing thing to me." New Orleans scored 44 points in the fourth quarter and finished on a 24-6 run.Rookies Jaxson Hayes and Nickeil Alexander-Walker combined for 34 points and shot 15 of 22 from the field for the Pelicans."We just have so many new people," Hayes said. "I feel like just getting used to playing with each other, learning the defense, all that type of stuff will just help a lot more." Guard Jrue Holiday has missed the last two games because of a sprained knee, and center Derrick Favors sat out the game against Golden State because of knee soreness. Gentry said both would be game-time decisions.--Field Level Media

NBA Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Clippers - 10/31/2019 - 10:35 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Clippers - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 31, 2019Kawhi Leonard will try to lead his new team, the Los Angeles Clippers, to a win against one of his former teams, the visiting San Antonio Spurs, on Thursday night. After Leonard spent seven seasons in San Antonio, his relationship with the organization deteriorated, and he was traded in July 2018 to the Toronto Raptors in a deal that sent DeMar DeRozan to the Spurs.Leonard went on to lead the Raptors to their first NBA title last spring in a surprising six-game victory against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Hot Sports Handicappers. The Spurs, meanwhile, were eliminated in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.Leonard then signed with the Clippers in the offseason. In the first of their two head-to-head matchups last season, DeRozan delivered his first NBA triple-doubl e while leading the Spurs to a 125-107 victory in Leonard's return to San Antonio on Jan. 3.They met again on Feb. 22 in Toronto, and Leonard ripped the ball from DeRozan before scoring the go-ahead points on a dunk with 15 seconds left in the 120-117 win.The Clippers rested Leonard on Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City and faded in the second half of the 110-96 loss."Our goal is to have (Leonard) playing and being fresh all year, and we're doing that so far," Clippers coach Doc Rivers told reporters before the game against the Jazz.San Antonio is also being careful with the workload of Dejounte Murray, a first-round pick from 2016 who missed last season after tearing his ACL in the summer of 2018.Murray will sit out one of the two games in back-to-back situations this season -- the Spurs play at Golden State on Friday -- and will average about five minutes per quarter, at least through the first 10 games.Murray is averaging 14.7 points in 23 minutes through three games, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he plans to stand firm on the medical staff's desire to limit Murray's exertion during the early part of this season."One game isn't that important to put him out there when the docs feel he shouldn't be," Popovich said after the win against Portland.San Antonio has been off since beating the visiting Portland Trail Blazers on Monday to improve to 3-0.Like the Clippers, the Spurs caught the Trail Blazers on the second night of back-to-back games, but it was Portland who had better legs down the stretch, cutting a 19-point deficit with 5:48 remaining to three with 40 seconds left. However, the Trail Blazers couldn't get any closer while falling 113-110.Two nights earlier, the Spurs were in a much tighter battle throughout the fourth quarter against the visiting Washington Wizards before hanging on for a 124-122 victory. The Clippers added more depth when shooting guard Rodney McGruder made his season debut against the Jazz after missing the first four games with an ankle injury. McGruder, who spent the past three seasons with the Miami Heat, missed all three field-goal attempts and went scoreless in 18 minutes.Lou Williams, getting a rare start, led Los Angeles with 24 points Wednesday.--Field Level Media

NFL Game Preview: San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals - 10/31/2019 - 8:20 PM EST

NFL Game Preview: San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 30, 2019GLENDALE, Ariz. Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson remembers this version of the San Francisco 49ers. Top Rated Sports Handicappers. The nine-year veteran broke into the NFL back in 2011 with Arizona and during his early years, the games against division rival San Francisco were always a difficult task. The Niners won 36 regular-season games from 2011-13 and made the Super Bowl in the 2012 season. ''To me, it resembles that same style of football,'' Peterson said. ''Building that team up front on both sides of the ball, taking their shots when they can and playing great defense. They have their personnel and they're playing some real good football. '' San Francisco (7-0) travels to face Arizona (3-4-1) on Thursday night and enters the ga me on quite a roll. The 49ers crushed the Carolina Panthers 51-13 on Sunday and have been plowing through their schedule with one of the league's best defenses. Arizona is coming off a 31-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. That dud ended a three-game winning streak for the Cardinals, who knocked off the Bengals, Falcons and Giants in consecutive weeks before the setback in New Orleans. Cardinals rookie quarterback Kyler Murray said that after Sunday's poor performance, the team is eager to get back on the field, especially at home. ''That should be fun. Wearing all black, Thursday night, real first prime-time game for us,'' Murray said. ''Just really trying to go out there and put on a show and protect home. '' CONDENSED SCHEDULEThe Niners took a different approach this week with a Thursday game. The coaches slept at the facility to get as much work on the game plan done as possible. For the players, sleep was the priori ty. San Francisco didn't practice Monday and then had a walkthrough on Tuesday under the stadium lights rather than the usual afternoon practice. ''I feel like sleep is so important on these quick turnarounds, so we wanted the guys to sleep in a little bit more than usual,'' coach Kyle Shanahan said. Soccer Handicappers. Then the team planned a quick practice Wednesday before flying to Arizona. RAGGED RUNNING GAMEArizona's three-game winning streak was built on a balanced offense, with the team leaning on the running back duo of David Johnson and Chase Edmonds. Now both players are injured and the Cardinals have had to adjust in a hurry. With Edmonds (hamstring) out and Johnson (ankle) questionable for Thursday's game, the Cardinals traded for Kenyan Drake on Monday, giving up a conditional sixth-round pick in 2020. Free Predictions.  The 25-year-old Drake joins Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner, who were signed last week because of injuries, in the running back rotation. He'll have to learn the offense in less than 72 hours to have an impact. ''It's actually funny - the longest-tenured running back here who is healthy has been here in six days,'' Drake said. ''We've all got a learning curve, but we're helping each other out. '' BOSA VS. MURRAYThis marks the first of what should be several meetings between the top two picks in the 2019 draft. Both teams are pleased with their choices with Murray off to a solid start in Arizona after being picked first and defensive end Nick Bosa dominating in San Francisco as the second pick. Bosa became the third rookie to get three sacks and an interception in a game last week against Carolina and now gets a tougher test chasing down the mobile Murray. ''I try to keep my eyes on my work, which is the offensi ve lineman, which helps me beat offensive linemen,'' Bosa said. ''But with a quarterback like this, you have to have eyes on the backfield and you have to know what his tendencies are when it comes to escaping so you can counter it. '' CAREFUL CARDINALSArizona has had no turnovers over the past four games, which is tied for the longest streak in franchise history. The ball security is remarkable considering the Cardinals are playing with a rookie quarterback and several young players at other skill positions. Murray has thrown four interceptions this year and the Cardinals haven't lost a fumble. The four turnovers through eight games are the fewest in the NFL. SHERMAN VS. FITZSan Francisco cornerback Richard Sherman and Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald have had plenty of meetings over the years as NFC West rivals. The two have faced off 14 times since Sherman entered the league with Seattle in 2011 and are often matched up against each other. Fitzgerald has 77 catches for 882 yards and three TDs in those games and the two have formed a close relationship over that time. ''I appreciate going against him the most,'' Sherman said. ''He always gives great challenges. '' --- Sports Writer Josh Dubow in Santa Clara, California, contributed to this story. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

NHL Game Preview: Calgary Flames vs. Nashville Predators - 10/31/2019 - 8:05 PM EST

NHL Game Preview: Calgary Flames vs. Nashville Predators - Date: 10/31/2019 The Nashville Predators made a big investment on Tuesday, and they did it in an area in which the club already excels -- defense. The Predators signed defenseman Roman Josi to an eight-year, $72.472 million contract that will keep the Swiss blueliner in the Music City through the 2027-28 season.Josi and the Predators host the Calgary Flames on Thursday in the first meeting of the season between the teams. If there is one aspect of the game that Nashville general manager David Poile focuses on frequently, it is securing the back end of his lineup -- starting with goaltender Pekka Rinne and moving out into the rear guard.Last Nov. 3, on Rinne's 36th birthday, Poile inked the Finnish netminder to a two-year, $10 million contract extension.Later that night against Boston, Rinne -- the franchise's record-holder for most wins and shutouts -- blanked Boston 1-0 in a 26-save performance. On Tuesday it was Josi who had his turn, as Poile and the organization made a sizable commitment to their captain."Roman Josi is one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League and our team leader as captain," Poile said. "As he enters his prime, we look forward to Roman continuing to showcase his elite skills in Smashville and guiding our team in pursuit of the ultimate goal, the Stanley Cup." While Josi, 29, has been strong in his defensive responsibilities, he has been even better providing offense for the Central Division team.Josi's 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 12 games tied him for third among the NHL's defensemen entering Wednesday's games. Fellow blueliner Ryan Ellis (two goals, 11 assists) also has a baker's dozen.Nick Bonino scored all three goals for his third career hat trick, and Rinne posted 20 saves for his 57th career shutout in Tuesday night's 3-0 win over the Chicago B lackhawks. It was the Predators' season-high fourth straight victory, and Rinne recorded his second consecutive shutout.Calgary led 1-0 over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N. C., on Tuesday, but the Flames couldn't make Elias Lindholm's eighth tally stand up.In fact, they gave up a pair of goals -- one on a marker that is an early Goal of the Year candidate -- in a 2-1 loss to the Metropolitan team.At 6-6-2 through 14 games, Calgary is treading water and on pace for an 82-point campaign, which would have the Flames solely concerned about next June's draft in Montreal. In the Carolina loss, Calgary failed to score a power-play goal for the first time in four games and managed just four third-period shots. Sports Handicapping Service Units Gained. The buzz afterward was all about Andrei Svechnikov's dazzling lacrosse-style goal that evened the game at 1.The Hurricanes' left winger placed hi s stick flat on the ice, scooped the puck onto the blade and wrapped the puck into the net past Calgary netminder David Rittich."They were skating better than us, they were all over us," Flames right winger Matthew Tkachuk said. "They took it to us and had all the momentum in the world, and (Svechnikov) scored an awesome goal there." --Field Level Media

NBA Game Preview: Miami Heat vs. Atlanta Hawks - Date: 10/31/2019 Oct 30, 2019The Miami Heat will have their star in the lineup Thursday for their rematch with Atlanta, but the Hawks will be missing their elite player.Jimmy Butler, acquired as part of a sign-and-trade over the summer, made his Miami debut on Tuesday and led the Heat to a 112-97 win over Atlanta.Meanwhile, the Hawks lost point guard Trae Young, the NBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Young injured his ankle on Tuesday and won't play when the teams get together again at Atlanta's State Farm Arena.Butler scored 12 points in the first quarter and finished with 21 in his first game with his new team, a debut that was put on hold due to the arrival of his newborn daughter."All good things," Butler said. "We won. Obviously, I'm a father, but I'm blessed beyond measure. I get to play basketball with some incredible guys, for an incredible organization. Life is good right now." Butler's late arrival allowed rookie Tyler Herro to get off to a great start. In his first game as a non-starter, he came off the bench to score a career-high 29. NBA Game Recap: Phoenix Suns (121) vs. Golden State Warriors (110) - Date: 10/30/2019 Oct 31, 2019SAN FRANCISCO In what has already been a rough start to the season for the Warriors, now Stephen Curry is down. A two-time MVP, Golden State's longest-tenured player and its oldest at age 31. Free Sports Picks. The heart and soul of his team.Curry broke his left hand and became the latest injured Warriors player when he fell hard in the third quarter of another embarrassing defeat by Golden State, 121-110 to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. A CT scan will determine whether Curry needs surgery, the Warriors said.''I just feel bad for him,'' Suns coach Monty Williams said. ''When these guys who are the faces of the league go down it's not good for the league, but especially someone like Steph, who's done so much to raise the level of e xcitement here in the Bay Area and throughout the league.'' Curry drove to his left defended by Kelly Oubre Jr. and with big man Aron Baynes standing solidly in the paint. Curry leapt with the ball then came down head first landing awkwardly on his hands to brace himself from the court, with Baynes crashing onto Curry's left hand. Curry grimaced in pain grabbing at his fingers then walked to the locker room with 8:31 left in the third quarter.''Aron Baynes came up after the game and just wanted to know how Steph was doing,'' coach Steve Kerr said. ''You could tell he felt really bad. It's just a random basketball play, so stuff happens.'' NBA Game Recap: Los Angeles Clippers (96) vs. Utah Jazz (110) - Date: 10/30/2019 Oct 31, 2019SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Jazz had to kick Mike Conley out of the gym Wednesday morning.Conley kept shooting until the coaching staff pleaded for him to ''save something for the game.'' Turns out, he had plenty left.Conley snapped an early season slump with 29 points and the Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 110-96 on Wednesday night with Kawhi Leonard sitting out.''I just wanted to get back to who I am,'' Conley said. ''I hit one, hit two and could feel going. I felt the energy from the crowd and my teammates and said, yes, this is the game.'' Conley had 18 points in the third quarter as the Jazz scored 40 in the period and took a 90-71 lead. Utah (4-1) has won three in a row.Leonard missed the game for scheduled rest, though coach Doc Rivers has said his star forward has been healthy and energized. Lou Williams paced the Clippers (3-2) with 24 points, 16 before halftime. The matchup of one of the league's top defenses against one of the top offenses lost some its luster without Leonard, but the Jazz showed how potent they could be with 55 percent shooting while holding their opponents below 100 points for the fifth straight game.''Our guys take pride on the defensive end,'' Utah coach Quin Snyder said. ''We were better on the ball, in pursuit of t he ball handlers and got some contests (in the third quarter).'' Conley responded with a 3-pointer and a lob to Gobert for a dunk.''Second half, they made some tough shots,'' Patrick Beverly said. ''They made the shots that we wanted them to take.'' Conley struggled in his first four games with Utah after playing 12 years in Memphis, including a 1-for-16 shooting performance in the opener and an 0-for-7 outing in the last game. In recent days, he admitted it has taken more time than he expected to feel comfortable with the Jazz plays and terminology.''As much as I tried not to, I was pressing. I have to say some doubt crept in. It was consuming,'' Conley said. When Conley hit a 3-pointer and followed it with a tough layup high off the backboard in third quarter, he pumped his fist and yelled to the rafters. When Los Angeles called timeout, the entire Jazz bench leaped off the bench and ran onto the court to greet the point guard.''It's a big relief and I've really wanted to start playing like I'm used to. I hope this is the beginning of the positive Mike,'' Conley said.A few minutes later, Conley hit a high-arcing 3-pointer and motioned for the crowd to get louder. Cheers rang out and then turned into chants of ''Con-ley, Con-ley, Con-ley''.''I've never experienced that before in 13 years of playing basketball. It was special and I could tell the crowd was feeling like I was, just waiting and had a lot of energy built up,'' Conley said. After just nine made field goals in his first four games, Conley made 11 of 17 shots, including five 3-pointers, and had five assists with a season-low two turnovers.''Mike's a pretty calm guy but when he was screaming and yelling, once we saw that, we were f eeding of it,'' Mitchell said. The Jazz were hot from the start and led by 14 points early in the second quarter. MLB Game Recap: Washington Nationals (6) vs. Houston Astros (2) - 10/30/2019

MLB Game Recap: Washington Nationals (6) vs. Houston Astros (2) - Date: 10/30/2019 Nationals top Astros in Game 7 to win 1st World Series titleHOUSTON Almost out of contention in May, champs in October.Howie Kendrick, Anthony Rendon and the Washington Nationals completed their amazing comeback journey - fittingly with one last late rally on the road.In Game 7 of the World Series, no less.Kendrick and Rendon homered in the seventh inning as the Nationals overcame a two-run deficit, rocking the Houston Astros 6-2 Wednesday night to win the first title in franchise history. With all eyes on Max Scherzer and his remarkable recovery after a painkilling injection, these Nationals truly embraced their shot in the only Series when the road team won every game.Even more against the odds: Juan Soto and Washington came from behind to win five elimination games this postseason, an unprecedented feat.''What a story,'' said Rya n Zimmerman, the Nationals' initial draft pick back in 2005.''I hope D. C.'s ready for us to come home!''World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, new lefty Patrick Corbin and the Nats brought the first World Series championship to the nation's capital since ol' Walter Johnson delivered the crown for the Senators in 1924.This franchise started out as the Montreal Expos in 1969 when the major leagues expanded beyond the border, putting a team with tricolor caps at jaunty Jarry Park. Free Sports Picks Daily. They moved to D. C. in 2005, ending Washington's three-decade-plus wait for big league baseball after the Senators left town to become the Texas Rangers. But the incredible path these wild-card Nationals with the curly W logo took, well, no one could have imagined.''Resilient, relentless bunch of guys,'' manager Dave Martinez said. ''They fought all year long.& #39;' Having lost star slugger Bryce Harper to free agency and beset by bullpen woes, Washington plummeted to 19-31 in late May. It got so bad there was talk around town the Nationals might fire Martinez and trade away Scherzer.Instead, they stuck with the mantra that sprung up on T-shirts - Stay In The Fight.''That was out motto,'' Scherzer said. And months later they finished it, indeed.''Guess what? We stayed in the fight. We won the fight!'' Martinez shouted during the trophy celebration on the field.''We were down and out. We were 19-31. We didn't quit then, we weren't going to quit now,'' he said. For the 43,326 revved-up fans at Minute Maid Park, it was a combination of shock and disappointment. So close to seeing the Astros win their second title in three years, they watched their chance suddenly vanish as Houston fell apart.''I've got a group of heartbroken men in there that did everything they co uld to try to bring a World Series championship to this city. And we fell one win shy,'' Astros manager AJ Hinch said.''Let's be honest, there's 28 other teams that would love to have our misery today. We play to get here. We play to have an opportunity to win it all. And I just told our team, it's hard to put into words and remember all the good that happened because right now we feel as bad as you can possibly feel,'' he added.Washington kept pulling away after taking the lead, with Adam Eaton's two-run single in the ninth accounting for the final margin.Zack Greinke was in complete control until Rendon - a Houston prep and college star - hit a home run that cut Houston's lead to 2-1 in the seventh. When Soto followed with a one-out walk, manager AJ Hinch decided to make a move. He'd had ace starter Gerrit Cole warming up in the bullpen earlier, but this call was for Will Harris.Kendrick connected on the second pitch, slicing a drive that hit the screen attached to the right field foul pole. Just like that, everything had changed for the team in orange that led the majors in wins, and the ballpark fell silent. For Kendrick, another timely blow. At 36, playing on the oldest team in the majors, the journeyman earned the NL Championship Series MVP award against St. Louis after hitting the winning grand slam in the 10th inning of the deciding Game 5 in the Division Series at Dodger Stadium. Then again, this was nothing new for the Nationals.Washington rallied in the eighth to beat Milwaukee in the wild-card game and took the last two to beat Los Angeles in the NLDS, setting up a sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS.Far away, a big crowd poured into Nationals Park for a watch party. Sports Handicapper King. That was the stadium where Houston hammered the Nats for three games last weekend, but their luck changed in Texas.''The way this ga me went is the way our whole season went,'' said Zimmerman, the last player left from the 2005 Nationals team that debuted in Washington. This World Series had lacked a lot of drama, aside from a volatile call of interference in Washington's Game 6 win that stoked heated debate across the sports world. Who knew rule 5.09(a)(11) could stir such passion? With Greinke and Scherzer grunting on every pitch, Game 7 was a classic duel from the start.Yuli Gurriel put the Astros ahead with a home run in the second and Carlos Correa added an RBI single off Scherzer that made it 2-0 in the fifth.Scherzer was done after the fifth, but he had done his job to keep it close. Only a few days earlier, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had been unable to lift his right arm because of nerve irritation near his neck.Daniel Hudson, released by the Angels in March, closed it out for the Nationals, who made Houston pay for stranding so many runners on base all game. Hudson struck out Michael Brantley for the last out, then threw his glove to start the celebration. For the Astros, who brought baseball into the Space Age with their far-out Astrodome and AstroTurf, and helped zoom the game into the galaxy of the Analytics Era, it was a startling end.Houston shares a spring training complex in Florida with the Nationals and reported to camp in February full of high hopes. The Astros breezed to the AL West title, edged Tampa Bay in a five-game ALDS and topped the Yankees in the ALCS. NHL Handicappers. They played through front-office fiasco, which led to the firing of an executive for a boorish rant at female reporters during a clubhouse celebration.UP NEXTThe Astros and Nationals start training side-by-side in a few months and open exhibition play with a World Series rematch on Feb. 22 at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. They met in their Grapefruit League opener this year and Scherzer gave up a home run to the first batter of the game.---More MLB: and

NCAAF Game Preview: Boise State vs. San Jose State - 11/2/2019 - 10:30 PM EST

NCAAF Game Preview: Boise State vs. San Jose State - Date: 11/2/2019 Oct 30, 2019No. 21 Boise State lost its last game, then had a bye week to dissect the defeat. Sports Handicapper Tracker. The Broncos (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) look to rebound from their Oct. 19 loss to BYU and get back on the winning track when they return to the field for a visit to San Jose State on Saturday night. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said the collective attitude inside the program remained high despite the run at an unbeaten season being sidetracked in mid-October. "We didn't sulk. We didn't sit there and pout about what happened," Harsin said at a press conference. "We just used the week to our advantage and tried to look at all the things we need to improve at and get better. " The Broncos normally don't discuss injuries unless they are season-ending, so Harsin revealed nothing about whether true freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier (hip) would play against the Spartans. Bachmeier sustained the injury in an Oct. 12 win over Hawaii, interrupting a strong campaign in which he has passed for 1,547 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions. World's Best Handicapper. The offense wasn't nearly as efficient in the 28-25 loss to BYU that represented sophomore quarterback Chase Cord's first career start. Cord passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and also was intercepted twice. Sports Handicapper Picks. The Broncos will be without one of their two top running backs in junior Robert Mahone, who sustained a lower-leg injury against BYU. Harsin said the injury isn't season-ending but otherwise declined to elaborate. The absence of Mahone (389 rushing yards, five scores) should increase t he workload of true freshman George Holani, who has rushed for 463 yards and one touchdown. San Jose State (4-4, 1-3) will be looking to post a program-boosting upset. However, the Spartans are 0-13 all-time against the Broncos. San Jose State is much improved over the last two seasons, when it was a combined 3-22. The Spartans haven't won six games in a season since 2015 (6-7) and haven't had a winning season since 2012 (11-2). San Jose State reached the . 500 mark last Saturday with a 34-29 victory at Army. The Spartans, who average 28. 4 points, are 4-1 when they score 30 or more. Senior quarterback Josh Love passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns against Army, but he wasn't satisfied with the offense settling for four field goals. "Obviously, we could've probably scored a couple of touchdowns in there where we kicked some field goals, but we were putting up points and the defense did their job, and we had to help them," Love told reporters . Love has been a big factor in San Jose State's improvement. He has passed for 2,355 yards and 15 touchdowns while being intercepted just three times in 293 attempts. "He is just outstanding," Spartans coach Brent Brennan told reporters. "His ability to distribute the ball to different people on the field makes our offense go. " The Spartans' defense has intercepted 13 passes, second nationally behind Oregon's 14. Sophomore cornerback Nehemiah Shelton, senior corner Brandon Ezell and junior safety Bobby Brown II share the team lead of three. "San Jose is around the ball," an impressed Harsin said of the interception prowess. "They catch the balls thrown to them, and I think they put teams in tough situations where they have to make some difficult throws. " San Jose senior linebacker Ethan Aguayo has a team-best 69 tackles despite missing three games due to an injury. Boise State's defense is led by elite junior pas s rusher Curtis Weaver, who has 9. 5 sacks this season and ranks third in school history with 30. He is two behind second-place Chris Wing (1994-96). --Field Level Media

NCAAF Game Preview: Oregon vs. USC - 11/2/2019 - 8:00 PM EST

NCAAF Game Preview: Oregon vs. USC - Date: 11/2/2019 Oct 30, 2019Both No. 7 Oregon and USC remain in control of their respective Pac-12 divisions after late wins last week. Now, they meet Saturday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Oregon (7-1, 5-0 Pac-12) won its seventh straight game and continued its best conference start since 2013 with a last-second field goal last Saturday vs. Washington State. The Ducks controlled the game much of the way, but fell behind 35-34 with a minute remaining. Sports Cappers. The Ducks moved the ball 53 yards on the subsequent possession to set up kicker Camden Lewis' 26-yard game-winning field goal, scoring the first Oregon victory over Washington State since 2014. "When you have a victory like that -- and over the past couple weeks, our team has found ways to win," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said in his Monday news conf erence, alluding to comeback defeats of Cal and Washington in the previous weeks. "Somebody in that locker room, and sometimes an unexpected person, was going to have to step up and make plays. " While the outcome was not make-or-break for Oregon's prospects in the Pac-12 North -- the Ducks went into Week 9 with a three-game lead over the rest of the division, and head-to-head wins against Cal, Stanford and Washington -- the win keeps the team in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth. Now in Oregon's way is USC, a team with designs not on a playoff invitation, but a surprise Pac-12 title and a potential Rose Bowl bid. The Trojans (5-3, 4-1) already hold a head-to-head win over the conference's only other playoff contender -- a 30-23 win over No. 9-ranked Utah on Sept. 20. USC won that game attacking the Utes secondary with deep passes to a talented wide receiving corps. Michael Pittman Jr. , who racked up 232 yards and what proved to be the decisive touchdown vs. Utah, scored another game winner last week at Colorado. His 37-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Kedon Slovis gave USC the 35-31 win in a game it trailed for about 42 minutes. The victory was USC's first on the road this season, and critical in maintaining its lead atop the South. "Every week is a championship game," Trojans coach Clay Helton said following Monday practice. "If you don't bring your A-game, you can get your butt beat. " So far, no opponent has been able to beat USC at the Coliseum. The Trojans are 4-0 at home after an Oct. 19 rout of Arizona. Oregon's the highest-ranked opponent to visit USC since Notre Dame came to the Coliseum ranked No. 3 last November. The Fighting Irish's 24-17 victory marked the Trojans' last home loss, and the second in a row after Cal snapped a streak that spanned three calendar years. "It's always fun when you're out there at home," USC lineb acker John Houston Jr. said after the 41-14 win over Arizona. Houston and the rest of the Trojans defense has not allowed more than 23 points at home this season, while giving up at least 28 in every road effort. This week, they try to maintain that home-field edge against a balanced Oregon offense that makes very few mistakes. Quarterback Justin Herbert has thrown for 21 touchdowns against just one interception -- although his streak of consecutive games with at least one scoring pass ended at 35 against Washington State. Basketball Predictions. That was a byproduct of the Ducks rushing well, though. CJ Verdell posted 257 yards with three touchdowns in the win. He'll be rejoined by Travis Dye, who left last week's game after taking a helmet-to-helmet shot. Cristobal said both running back Travis Dye and linebacker Troy Dye are cleared for Saturday's trip to USC. Hot Sports Handicappers. Troy Dye, Oregon's leading tackler, missed the Washington State game with a broken thumb. --Field Level Media

NCAAF Game Preview: SMU vs. Memphis - 11/2/2019 - 7:30 PM EST

NCAAF Game Preview: SMU vs. Memphis - Date: 11/2/2019 Oct 30, 2019As the press release from Memphis' sports information department noted following the Tigers' 42-41 win at Tulsa last week, "Sometimes, a memorable season needs the assistance of a fortunate break. " Or in this case, a pulled 29-yard field goal as time expired. That Golden Hurricane miscue propelled the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 American Athletic Conference) into the surprising marquee game of Week 10 in college football. With ESPN's "GameDay" descending on Memphis for its pregame show and then sticking around to air the No. 24 Tigers' showdown with unbeaten and No. 15 SMU on Saturday night, the AAC West gets a rare crack at the national spotlight. Of course, the Mustangs (8-0, 4-0) have also absorbed a few smooches on the cheek from dame fortune. They have four wins by seven points or fewer, including a 34-31 nail-biter on Oct. 24 at a 3-5 Houston team that is looking forward to 2020 more than it's trying to win games in 2019. In any event, SMU has stamped itself as the favorite among six schools to win the Group of Five's berth in the Cotton Bowl, which would be a de facto home game for the Mustangs. But SMU has a tougher path to get there than other contenders with this game and a Nov. 23 trip to Navy remaining. SMU is doing it with offense. Prior to the Houston game, the Mustangs had scored at least 37 points in every game. They possess a wonderful blend of passing and running. They throwing for just over 300 yards per game with former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele pulling the trigger, and they are averaging 202. 8 yards per game on the ground behind senior Xavier Jones, who has rushed for 884 yards. "They find ways to win, and that's their deal this year," Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said. "They're in their second year in that system and they have a lot of sen iors and guys that have been doing the right stuff for them and it's showing. " Mustangs coach Sonny Dykes said his offense needs to compete at a much higher level than it did at Houston. However, Jones said he and his team simply did what they had to in order to stay undefeated. "It was an ugly game, but I'm really proud of my team for how we fought," he said. Memphis coach Mike Norvell felt much the same way after his team escaped Tulsa with a one-point win. The Tigers' defense was gashed for 584 yards and was on the field for a whopping 101 plays, but Memphis managed to stagger off with the win. "At the end of the day, you look up at the scoreboard, and being up by one is a great feeling," he said. Memphis freshman running back Kenneth Gainwell rushed for 149 yards and three scores at Tulsa for his sixth straight 100-yard game. Gainwell needs only 21 yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark for the year. --Field Level Media

NCAAF Game Preview: Utah vs. Washington - 11/2/2019 - 4:00 PM EST

NCAAF Game Preview: Utah vs. Washington - Date: 11/2/2019 Oct 30, 2019Two weeks ago, Washington took a 35-31 home loss to then-No. 12 Oregon. After a bye week, the Huskies (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) will play host to No. 9 Utah (7-1, 4-1) on Saturday in a rematch of last year's conference title game, which Washington won 10-3. "We got some good work done," Huskies coach Chris Petersen said of the bye. "I think guys appreciated last week just in terms of how it went, the time off, the practices we did. Got a chance more than anything to get rested up. . . . It was good, and on to a really good, really good Utah team. " The Utes are coming off a 35-0 victory against California, the first time they shut out a conference opponent since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. With quarterback Tyler Huntley hobbled by a lower left leg injury, the Utes turned to record-setting Zack Moss, who rushed for 115 yards and two touchdow ns. After becoming Utah's career leader in yards rushing two weeks ago, Moss increased his total to 33 rushing touchdowns and surpassed Del Rodgers, who set the previous mark of 31 from 1978-81. Moss also reached 100 yards rushing for the 15th time, breaking the school record he shared with Devontae Booker and John White IV. "It all feels really good, especially when it comes with winning," said Moss, who also had three catches for 89 yards. Moss said he drew inspiration from Huntley, who had been questionable to play. "It makes you want to go harder," Moss said. "I mean, the guy's a warrior. He worked so hard to get ready to play in this game. " Huntley threw for 214 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-17 passing in guiding the Utes to a 28-0 halftime lead. He sat out the second half. "The offensive line was more determined to protect him and keep the hits off him," Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said. "His toughness rubbed off on the rest of the team. " Just as tough was the defense, which held the Golden Bears to 33 yards of total offense in the first half.
