NCAAB Game Recap: Rider (37) vs. Wisconsin (65) - 12/31/2019

NCAAB Game Recap: Rider (37) vs. Wisconsin (65) - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 31, 2019MADISON, Wis. Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said the Badgers started Tuesday’s game exactly the way Rider wanted them to: tentative. But their defense gave them time to get things figured out, and then the barrage again. The Badgers knocked down 13 3-pointers, two off their season high, and Nate Reuvers was dominant in the post - particularly in the second half - as Wisconsin shook off a slow start to beat Rider 65-37.“We did exactly what you’d want a team to do against that” defense, Gard said, adding the Badgers were standing around and failing to move the ball. The teams combined to shoot 2 for 22 over the first seven minutes of the game. While Wisconsin (8-5) eventually found its shooting touch, Rider (7-4) did not.The Broncs came into the game shooting 44% overall, including 32% from 3-point range. But their 11 first-half points w ere a season low both for the Broncs and a Wisconsin opponent. Rider shot 16.7% from the floor in the first half and made just five field goals while going 0 for 7 from behind the arc. All were also season lows for a Wisconsin opponent.Rider coach Kevin Baggett credited Wisconsin’s defense with harassing his shooters all night. But it wasn’t just the contested shots that weren’t falling. With less than 8 minutes to go, Tyrel Bladen executed a pick-and-roll that got him an open look at the rim that he missed. He grabbed the putback without much resistance but missed again from point-blank range.Frederick Scott and Dimencio Vaughn scored seven points apiece to lead Rider.“I thought we rushed shots when we had opportunities to make shots,” Baggett said. “I thought they were all sped up and rushed rather than taking their time.”Several Badgers had flourishes from behind the 3-point line. Brevin Pritzl hit all 3 of his while the Badgers w ere struggling to a 9-7 lead midway through the first half. Brad Davison then knocked down three straight to open the second half as Aleem Ford added a fourth, giving he Badgers more points in three minutes than Rider had in the first 20. Profitable Handicappers. That pushed Wisconsin’s lead to 34-16 as the game quickly got out of hand.Ford finished with 14 points, while Pritzl and Davison had 11 apiece.Reuvers, who led the Badgers with 15, credited Pritzl with keeping the offense afloat until the rest of the Badgers could figure things out.“He just gave us a good spark when everything was just bad,” Reuvers said.DEFENSE LOCKED INThe Badgers wrapped up their non-conference schedule with back-to-back dominant performances defensively. Wisconsin’s 68-48 win at Tennessee had been the Badgers’ season low for both points in a game as well as the first half (24) prior to Tuesday. Wisconsin i s now giving up 60.5 points a game, and Pritzl said the Badgers are in a great place defensively heading into the meat of their conference schedule. “Offensively we’ve been a work in progress through the season,” he said. “But we’re starting to click and figure out what each other’s strengths are.”BIG PICTURERider: It’s a tough task for any Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team to take on the Badgers, who are now 9-1 all-time against the MAAC. Shooting as poorly as Rider did to start the game snuffed out any chances of an upset.Wisconsin: Rider was a final nonconference tuneup for the Badgers before Big Ten play kicks in full-time. NCAAB Game Recap: Boston College (49) vs. Duke (88) - 12/31/2019

NCAAB Game Recap: Boston College (49) vs. Duke (88) - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 31, 2019DURHAM, N. C. Freshman Matthew Hurt scored 20 of his season-high 25 points before halftime and Tre Jones returned from a foot injury to help second-ranked Duke beat Boston College 88-49 on Tuesday night.Hurt made 10 of 16 shots and was 5 of 10 on 3-pointers to lead the Blue Devils, who shot nearly 52% and hit their last five shots of the first half as they blew the game open shortly before the break. Duke (12-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) also had little trouble clamping down with its defensive pressure on a BC offense that came in ranked among the least efficient attacks in the country.Jones had missed the past two games for the Blue Devils with what was described as a mild sprain of his left foot, but finished with a game-high 10 assists.CJ Felder scored 13 points for the Eagles (8-6, 2-1), who had won four straight games coming in to Cameron Indoor Stadium. But they never mounted much of a response to Duke’s defensive pressure that turned away driving lanes and forced BC to settle for tough looks.BC shot just 34% and made 3 of 18 3-pointers, including a six-minute stretch in the first half without a basket that helped Duke stretch out its lead. Hurt and the Blue Devils closed out the half in a flurry, ending when Jones found Hurt alone in the corner to bury a 3 just before the halftime horn.By that point, Hurt -- who held his release to mark the make -- had matched his season-high scoring output and outscored BC 20-19 in the opening half.BIG PICTUREBoston College: BC fell to Duke for the 13th time in 14 meetings and is 0-11 all-time in Cameron. It was also a rough return for Derryck Thornton, who started his college career with a year at Duke before transferring to USC and ultimately ending up at BC as a graduate transfer. He came in averaging a team-best 13.8 points but finished with six points on 3-for- 12 shooting while also leaving briefly in the first half with a right-leg injury.Duke: The Blue Devils had two positive developments in this one. First was the return of Jones, a welcome sign for a team that needs his on-floor leadership and on-ball defensive pressure. Top Rated Sports Handicappers. Then there was Hurt, who got plenty of time to set his feet and get comfortable on some of those lead-stretching shots. Football Tipsters. The result was Duke earning its 300th victory of the decade (dating to January 2010) and its 899th all-time victory at its famously hostile home arena.UP NEXTBoston College: The Eagles host No. 19 Virginia next Tuesday.Duke: The Blue Devils visit Miami on Saturday night.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and http://www.twitter.com/-Top25---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/ aaronbeardap

NCAAF Game Recap: Georgia State (17) vs. Wyoming (38) - 12/31/2019

NCAAF Game Recap: Georgia State (17) vs. Wyoming (38) - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 31, 2019TUCSON, Ariz. Xazavian Valladay ran for 204 yards and scored two touchdowns, quarterback Levi Williams accounted for four scores and Wyoming rolled over Georgia State 38-17 in the Arizona Bowl on Saturday. Wyoming (8-5) started slow before scoring two quick touchdowns late in the first quarter and early in the second. The Cowboys built a 14-point lead by halftime and racked up 524 total yards to win a bowl game after being left out of the postseason last year. Williams made his first career start after Tyler Vander Waal entered the transfer portal but remained with the team for bowl practices. The freshman was poised under the bowl spotlight, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. Valladay had three catches for 91 yards and a touchdowns. Georgia State (7-6) jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but had a hard time stoppin g the big-play Cowboys. The Panthers twice turned the ball over on downs deep in Wyoming's end in the second half. Dan Ellington, who played with a torn right ACL, threw for 156 yards and a TD, adding 70 yards and a score rushing. Free MMA Picks. The Panthers got off to a fast start, marching quickly for Ellington's 4-yard TD run and going up 10-0 after a field goal. Make Money Betting Sports. The Cowboys took over from there, scoring two touchdowns in less than two minutes. Williams threw an 18-yard TD to Austin Conway and, following an interception thrown by Ellington, he found Valladay on an 8-yard score to put Wyoming up 17-7. Early in the second quarter, Williams had an interception deep in Georgia State's end on an ill-advised back-foot throw. He made a similar throw just before halftime, but that one turned into a 51-yard touchdown when Ayden Eberhardt broke two tackles, weaved through Georgia State's secondary and broke another tackle diving into the end zone. Basketball Handicappers. The Cowboys led 24-10 at halftime. Williams and Valladay connected on a 63-yard pass to open the second half and Valladay scored on a 1-yard run the next play. Georgia State responded quickly, pulling within 31-17 when Ellington hit Cornelius McCoy on a 44-yard TD. Wyoming kept gouging the Panthers' defense, though. Valladay broke two tackles on a 62-yard run, setting up Williams' 6-yard TD run around the right end. THE TAKEAWAYEllington put in a valiant effort while playing injured, but Georgia State's defense gave up too many big-chunk plays. Wyoming had a huge offensive day to cap a disappointing finish - 1-3 over its final four regular season games. UP NEXTWyoming loses four starters to graduation on offense and five on defense. Williams is a freshman and Valladay is a sophomore, giving the Cowboys two key skill players coming back. Georgia State loses just two starters on offense and one on defense, so the Panthers should be in good shape to possibly set another school record for wins. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Top25CollegeFootballPoll and https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

NBA Game Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Toronto Raptors - 12/31/2019 - 7:05 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Toronto Raptors - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 30, 2019The Cleveland Cavaliers will face a different starting lineup when they visit the Toronto Raptors for the second time in 15 days Tuesday night. When the Raptors defeated the Cavaliers 133-113 on Dec. 16, their starting lineup included Pascal Siakam, Marc Gasol and Norman Powell. All three are out indefinitely with injuries and will not face Cleveland this time.Siakam scored 33 points and Powell had 26 in that game against Cleveland. The Raptors are 3-3 without the trio after losing at home 98-97 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. The Cavaliers went on a season-high three-game winning streak after losing to the Raptors. The game in Toronto ends a three-game road trip for the Cavaliers, who split the first two games, losing to the Boston Celtics before beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-88 on Saturday despite committing 28 turnovers that led to 27 points.Cavaliers coach John Beilein said he had never won a game that way before. "Never. Ever. Ever," he said."A win is a win," forward Larry Nance Jr. said. "This one got a little bit ugly and we have to fix some things." Kevin Love did not play for the Cavaliers because of a right hip contusion."Our defense was everything to us (Saturday)," Beilein said. "If you look at the shooting stats, our contest rate was really high and we got there. Picks and Parlays. They missed a lot of shots, but I think we made them miss a lot of shots. Offensively, there was nothing pretty on both sides, but some days you rely on your defense." Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson, who is from Brampton, Ontario, recorded his 16th double-double of the season Saturday with 12 points and 15 rebounds."He was relentless," Beilein said. "He was relentless in rebounding of fensively and, particularly, defensively. Protected the rim, had a couple of verticalities and he was the heart and soul of our team in many ways." The Raptors have dropped three of their past four games, including consecutive games at home and are 8-7 in December. The Raptors were limited to eight fastbreak points -- including two in the second half -- in the loss to the Thunder. Handicapper Return on Investment. The Raptors entered the game averaging an NBA-best 18.8 fastbreak points per game."Early on, I thought guys turned it over a little carelessly early, right when they checked in," Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. "We kind of got that under control and I thought we had a lot of open shots in the first half we didn't make, and I thought we had a lot of open shots in the second half we didn't make, either. I thought we fought hard, so I am really proud of the guys for that." The Raptors were outscored 22-17 in the fourth quarter Sunday."Just didn't execute down the stretch," said Raptors guard Kyle Lowry, who scored 20 points Sunday to share the team high with Fred VanVleet. "They made a couple of shots; we made a couple of turnovers. It was a tough game. We did a good job on some defensive possessions and the ball bounced their way." NBA Game Preview: Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder - 12/31/2019 - 8:05 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 30, 2019Luka Doncic had a phenomenal rookie season in Dallas. He's been even better in Season 2.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got his NBA career off to a great start last season, as well, with the Los Angeles Clippers. Like Doncic, he has taken a big step forward in Year 2 -- but he's doing it with the Oklahoma City Thunder after an offseason trade.Tuesday night in Oklahoma City, two of the top second-year players in the NBA will meet when the Thunder play the Mavericks.Doncic played in his 100th NBA game in Sunday's loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles. And his first 100 games have been among the best first 100 any player has put together. His 28 games this season have been particularly impressive. After averaging 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists as a rookie, Doncic is averaging 28.8/9.5/9.0 this season."Honestly I didn't think it was going to be by that much," Doncic told the Dallas Morning News this week of his improvement. "But as long as we keep going like this, winning games, I wouldn't change anything. Like I've said from the beginning, we want to get into the playoffs. Sports Bettors Phone Leads. That's our goal." The Mavericks haven't made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season but are fifth in the Western Conference heading into Tuesday's game.No other player has made more 3-pointers during the first 100 games of a career than Doncic with his 250, and only one other player -- Oscar Robertson with 44 -- had more triple-doubles than Doncic's 17.Across the court, Gilgeous-Alexander has been a major piece in the Thunder's surprising 17-15 start. In Sunday's win at Toronto, Gilgeous-Alexander tied a career high with 32 points, the third time in five games he has reached the mark. He leads th e team with his 19.8-point scoring average."He's got it all," Thunder point guard Chris Paul told reporters of Gilgeous-Alexander. "Mid-range, finishes, shooting, and his defense -- his defensive intensity." The Thunder have won two consecutive games and six of their last seven.Oklahoma City is in the midst of a stretch of playing six of seven games away from home, with Tuesday's game being the lone home game during the two-week stint. The game is the first of three meetings between the teams this season. After wrapping up their three-game road trip in Oklahoma City, the Mavericks return home for their next six.The Mavericks could be without starter Tim Hardaway Jr., their third-leading scorer at 13.7 points per game, after he injured his left hamstring early in Sunday's loss.It could be worse for the Thunder, who could be without their Nos. 2 & 3 scorers against Dallas.Danilo Gallinari (18.0 ppg) has missed four consecutive games with left- ankle soreness while sixth man Dennis Schroder (18.4) is dealing with right ankle soreness.Schroder suffered the injury before Friday's game at Charlotte, but played in that game. But the injury kept him out of Sunday's game at Toronto. It's the 15th consecutive season, including the 12 since the team moved to Oklahoma City, that the Thunder franchise has hosted a New Year's Eve game.--Field Level Media

NBA Game Preview: Denver Nuggets vs. Houston Rockets - 12/31/2019 - 7:05 PM EST

NBA Game Preview: Denver Nuggets vs. Houston Rockets - Date: 12/31/2019 Dec 30, 2019Given their absentee list, the Houston Rockets had modest expectations while playing the second game of a back-to-back at New Orleans on Sunday. And, to an extent, they matched them.Missing their top three scorers -- James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Clint Capela -- the Rockets still managed a lead in the fourth quarter before succumbing to the suddenly resurgent Pelicans 127-112.Houston will host the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday at Toyota Center with its roster still in flux.Westbrook should return after his absence Sunday was mandated by rest. Harden (toe) and Capela (heel) remained questionable Monday, but Houston did welcome back Eric Gordon against New Orleans. He scored 20 points over 22 minutes in his first action since mid-November knee surgery."I'm really proud of the way they played and how they played and how they attacked," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It was a lot closer game than the final score (indicated) but this was a learning space for me and the guys that played some significant minutes and played well." Harden is averaging 38.3 points and 7.5 assists. Westbrook is at 24.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game, while Capela averages 13.9 points and 14.4 rebounds. With Gordon in the fold, the Rockets are a step closer to resetting their backcourt rotation, one that features ample depth and versatility. Harden, Westbrook and Gordon are the anchors, with Austin Rivers and Ben McLemore providing support as bench gunners. Without Gordon, the Rockets lacked the perimeter shooting and defense that often makes them whole."I just want to continue to build from this," Gordon said."I feel pretty good. Over the past year and a half, probably a year, I've been playing a little bit off-balance just fighting through a little nagging injury. I don't ha ve to worry about that now." The Nuggets have been worry-free for most of this month, winning for the ninth time in 10 games Sunday against the Sacramento Kings -- and doing so without Gary Harris and Paul Millsap. Harris missed the game because of shin injury, while Millsap has been on the sideline for the past two games due to a knee injury. With depth as their ally, the Nuggets plugged Michael Porter Jr. and Jerami Grant into their starting lineup and kept rolling, with that duo totaling 37 points and eight rebounds."I was just wanting to blend with the starting group and do what I could on the court just to make their job easier and be a positive part of the team," Porter said of his first career start."We've got a really, really good team. Leading Handicappers. There are a lot of really good players that are playing a lot of minutes right now. So you've just got to be thankful when y ou're in the game and just try to play as hard as you can because you've got dudes that can back you up if you're tripping." With much of the league focused on the Lakers-Clippers rivalry, Denver has quietly ascended to second in the West and remains a shining example of how to balance egos with a talent glut.Porter is just one of several players logging limited minutes because of the abundance of talent on hand."Sacrifice and selfless, easy things to talk about," Nuggets coach Mike Malone said. "Much harder to live every day." --Field Level Media

NHL Game Preview: Florida Panthers vs. Columbus Blue Jackets - 12/31/2019 - 7:08 PM EST

NHL Game Preview: Florida Panthers vs. Columbus Blue Jackets - Date: 12/31/2019 Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has a special New Year's Eve in mind.Bobrovsky on Tuesday will return to Columbus for the first time since leaving the Blue Jackets and signing a seven-year, $70 million contract with the Panthers in July.Bobrovsky beat the Blue Jackets 4-1 at Florida on Dec. 7. Sports Handicapping Services. The goaltender made 33 saves against his former team, which he led to a stunning first-round playoff upset over the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. It was the first and only playoff-series victory in Blue Jackets' history.Bobrovsky said it was "a different feeling" facing Columbus."It's kind of weird to face your former teammates," Bobrovsky said, "and them trying to score on you." Bobrovsky, who sports a 14-10-4 record, hasn't had a great season so far. His 3.26 goals-against average is up from last season's number (2.58) and up from the 2.06 he had in a career year for Columbus in 2016-2017. His save percentage has declined since his remarkable 2016-17 season, going from .931 to .921 to .913 to his current .898.Still, the Panthers have won two straight games. Baseball Predictions. They defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Saturday and the Montreal Canadiens 6-5 on Sunday.Winger Jonathan Huberdeau, who leads the Panthers in goals (16) and points (53), had two goals and two assists against the Canadiens."I had 160 tickets," Huberdeau said of the family members and friends who were at the BB&T Center to support him against Montreal on Sunday. "It was a lot of tickets. But it was fun. Sports Handicapping Service Units Gained. They' ve been so good to me." Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets -- who also lost star winger Artemi Panarin as a free agent to the New York Rangers -- enter Tuesday on a two-game skid. The Jackets lost 2-1 in overtime to the Washington Capitals on Friday and 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.Worse yet for the Blue Jackets, goalie Joonas Korpisalo -- who replaced Bobrovsky and had been considered Columbus' MVP this season -- suffered a knee injury Sunday. He is expected to miss several weeks of action.Columbus' new starting goalie is Elvis Merzlikins, a 25-year-old rookie from Latvia who has yet to win an NHL game.Merzlikins, who owns an 0-4-4 mark with a 3.41 GAA and an .889 save percentage, has told media members he wants to be left alone for a while."I just want to focus on my moment," said Merzlikins, who was Columbus' third-round pick in 2014. "I'm really sorry for 'Korpi.' He was playing amazing. It's just the bad luck of the sp ort." Columbus coach John Tortorella said he wanted to get more playing time for Merzlikins but had been unable to do so because of how hot Korpisalo (17-10-4, 2.49 GAA, .913 save percentage) had been. Now it will be left up to Merzlikins to try to slow down the Panthers, who rank second in the NHL with 3.55 goals per game. Florida's power play is tied for eighth (23.4 percent).Columbus ranks 27th on offense (2.59 goals per game) and its power play is ranked 22nd (16.9 percent).Defensively, however, Florida ranks 28th in goals allowed (3.34) and is tied for 22nd in penalty kill (78.6). Columbus ranks eighth in goals allowed (2.79) and tied for 15th in penalty kill (80.9).--Field Level Media

NCAAF Game Preview: Ohio vs. Nevada - 1/3/2020 - 3:30 PM EST

NCAAF Game Preview: Ohio vs. Nevada - Date: 1/3/2020 Dec 31, 2019Nevada has a cloud of uncertainty hovering over it with three defensive players suspended for the game and another missing the first half heading into the Wolf Pack's game against Ohio on Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. Nevada's defensive coaching staff is also in a state of flux with help from interim coaches Jody Sears, Josh Brown and former Nevada assistant John Landwehr, who will join the staff for the Potato Bowl. They will serve as replacements for the defensive coaches, including former defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, who were not retained by coach Jay Norvell, a decision announced earlier this month. "We're excited to have these high-quality coaches with us as we prepare for a really good Ohio team," Norvell told reporters recently. World's Best Handicappe r. The Bobcats (6-6) were listed 7. 5-point favorites at the beginning of the week (and up to 8 at some sportsbooks) partly because of the shift in personnel involving Nevada's defense. Nevada (7-5) will be without defensive backs Daniel Brown and Austin Arnold, and lineman Hausia Sekona (all of whom were suspended), and will also be without linebacker Gabriel Sewell for the first half. Those four were sanctioned by the Mountain West for their roles in the postgame melee that followed Nevada's 33-30 overtime loss to UNLV on Nov. 30. On top of that, sixth-year linebacker Lucas Weber is questionable for the bowl game. He has missed the second half of the season with a broken ankle. Fellow senior Jake Nelson, an offensive lineman, has also missed games because of injury and is hopeful to return Friday. "We both obviously want to do it, so we're just taking it day by day and we'll see how we feel when the day comes," Weber said. Ohio, on th e other hand, is riding a wave of momentum behind an efficient offense. Expert Sports Picks. The Bobcats were 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference before ending the season with a 66-24 victory at Bowling Green on Nov. 19 and a 52-3 dismantling of Akron on Nov. 26. The victory over the Zips clinched an 11th straight year of bowl eligibility for Ohio and a winning conference record for the fifth year in a row. Sports Handicapping Monitor. The 66 and 52 points are indicative of the offense's ability to produce, further evidenced by Ohio ranking fourth in the country and first among MAC teams with a 51. 6 percent third-down conversion rate (81 of 157). Senior quarterback Nathan Rourke will play in his 39th and final career game and make his 37th and final career start in the bowl. He owns a 23-13 record as a starting quarterback. Rourke is ranked first in program history with a career passing efficiency rating of 146. 9 and 192. 4 passing yards per game, second with 516 completions, 7,313 passing yards, and 60 career passing touchdowns. He ranks second in program history with 48 career rushing touchdowns and 6. 1 rushing yards per carry and ninth with 2,547 rushing yards. "You couldn't ask for a guy who is a better leader, who had great work ethic, who sets the pace for the rest of his teammates and a guy that's got talent," said veteran Ohio coach Frank Solich, who has taken the Bobcats to five straight bowls. --Field Level Media

NHL Game Preview: San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings - 12/31/2019 - 7:38 PM EST

NHL Game Preview: San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings - Date: 12/31/2019 The Detroit Red Wings will try to snap a six-game losing streak Tuesday night when they host the visiting San Jose Sharks, who snapped a four-game skid on Saturday.San Jose cruised to a 6-1 home win over the Philadelphia Flyers one night after dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Los Angeles. Sports Illustrated Picks. The Sharks had lost 10 of 11 games before their five-goal victory. The Sharks held a team meeting Saturday morning to discuss their problems."We had a good meeting and called each other on the carpets talking about the details and why we're struggling," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said.Timo Meier scored his first career hat trick."I thought today was one of our better efforts, but now we have to move on and keep improving," he said on the team's website.Meier, a fourth-year forward, increased his season total to 14 goals and 25 points. He's still behind his pace of last season, when he scored a career-best 30 goals and 66 points in 78 games. Meier had just two goals during the month before his hat trick against Philadelphia."I know I can do more," he said. "Same as our team; we have to take more steps." In the first meeting between San Jose and Detroit on Nov. 16, the Sharks won 4-3 in a shootout. Kevin Labanc was the standout that night, tallying a goal, two assists and the shootout winner. The Wings have three long losing streaks this season, including their current skid. Hot Sports Handicappers. They dropped one-goal decisions to Florida and Tampa Bay during the weekend. In their 2-1 loss to the Lightning on Sunday, the Wings had only 20 shots on goal."I thought our guys came out and we played hard, we battled, but we didn't have enough ," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "The ice got tilted the wrong way. I thought we lost momentum, and we just never got it back. We just couldn't get much going offensively." Goalie Jonathan Bernier kept the Wings in the game by making 37 saves."I thought Bernier was excellent -- he was our best player, gave us a chance to be in position to get either a point or two points," Blashill said. "He was the best player on the team." Robby Fabbri scored the only Detroit goal on Sunday against Tampa Bay when he redirected a Filip Hronek shot during the second period. Fabbri, acquired from St. Louis last month, has been one of the few sources of offense for the Wings. He has 10 goals, nine since joining the Wings. Professional Handicappers. The goal on Sunday was his first since Dec. 12 against the Winnipeg Jets."He's been really good for us," Bernier said on the team's website. "Obviously, he sees the ice well. He seems to be in good position all the time." The Wings (9-28-3), stumbling through one of the worst seasons in franchise history, won just three games in November and need one victory to match that win total for December.--Field Level Media

NHL Game Preview: New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers - 12/31/2019 - 9:08 PM EST

NHL Game Preview: New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers - Date: 12/31/2019 Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl own the two highest point totals in the NHL but the Edmonton Oilers are slumping and threatening to completely undo a fast start.Edmonton hopes to get things headed in the right direction Tuesday night when it hosts the New York Rangers. The Oilers opened the season with five straight wins, the last being a 4-1 win at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 12 when McDavid scored the tiebreaking goal and Draisaitl scored twice. Edmonton's win in New York also was part of a 16-7-3 start through Nov. 24.Edmonton, however, is 4-10-1 in its last 15 games and has been held under three goals in 11 games while allowing at least four goals in nine games. One of those games was a 5-1 home loss to Calgary on Saturday night, when Edmonton fell behind 11 seconds in and allowed a goal within the first two minutes of each period."Our mindse t to defend, which was so strong coming out of training camp, has eroded and when you start chasing games as often as we've done, you don't look like a good team and that's exactly how we started the game," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said.McDavid scored Edmonton's lone goal and his 63 points are two more than Draisaitl. McDavid has three goals and 14 points in 13 games this month after getting 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) in 14 games last month. Draisaitl has six goals and 13 points in 13 games this month after compiling 23 points last month (four goals, 19 assists)."It's a confidence issue," McDavid said. "When things are going good and something bad happens, you bounce back right away. Now, it just seems when something bad happens we're just waiting for another bad thing to happen again. We've got to snap out of that." The Rangers head to Edmonton attempting to get a third straight win for the second time this season. New York's first three-game winning streak was from Nov. 23-27 and the Rangers are 7-6-4 in the 17 games since then.New York has scored 10 goals overall in its last two games and swept a back-to-back set against Carolina and Toronto after going 1-3-1 in its previous five games. Sports Picks Free. The Rangers followed up Friday's 5-3 home win over Carolina with a 5-4 overtime victory in Toronto where they blew a two-goal lead before Tony DeAngelo scored 51 seconds into overtime."There was a buy-in tonight," New York's Chris Kreider said. "Guys not necessarily felt their best after the schedule the way it was. It's never an excuse. Every team is dealing with their own stuff. For us to come in here on the road against a very good team, in a very hard building to play in, and come out with two points is big for us." Artemi Panarin had three assists Saturday and according to NHL Stat s and Information is the first Ranger with at least 50 points in the first 38 games of the season since Jaromir Jagr in 2006-07. He has 17 points (eight goals and nine assists) in his last 10 games. His 51 points are eighth in the NHL.Mika Zibanejad also is on a roll for the Rangers. He scored two power-play goals Friday, scored Saturday and has 13 points (eight goals, five assists) in his last eight games. NHL Game Preview: Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Buffalo Sabres - Date: 12/31/2019 The Tampa Bay Lightning have enjoyed their results at home in December, but the start of 2020 will see the Atlantic Division club taking their show on the road.Head coach Jon Cooper and his group of Bolts will begin a four-game road trip with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop on Tuesday night in Buffalo against the slumping Sabres in the teams' final meeting this season.Tampa Bay feasted on its home schedule in December by earning points in seven of 10 contests (6-3-1), but now it will have to have to maintain the momentum by playing in Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Carolina. The club's success within the division cannot be overlooked either. After starting the season 2-2-0 against its foes from the Atlantic, the team has won 11 straight, routinely gaining ground and inching up the standings as they chase leader Boston, second-place Toronto and down-state rival Florida, in third.Tampa Bay has been victorious in all three games against Buffalo, outscoring first-year head coach Ralph Krueger's squad 13-7 in a trio of regulation wins. The first two contests were in Stockholm as part of the NHL's Global Series early in November, allowing Swedish locals to see homegrown stars like Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman, who was named the league's First Star of the Week on Monday, and Buffalo's Rasmus Dahlin. The Lightning earned a pair of one-goal wins in regulation over the weekend, beating Montreal 5-4 -- despite being outshot 17-0 to start the game -- and Detroit 2-1.They earned their franchise-record 16th straight regular-season victory over the Red Wings -- the third-longest win streak over one opponent in NHL history.Sunday's win over Detroit also marked the return of Lightning defenseman Braydon Coburn, who had missed the club's last 13 games with a lower-body injury."We've won a couple of now, but it's basically keeping us in the pack," Cooper said. "Everyone (in the conference is) playing well." Buffalo is looking to salvage one game in the season series and play better without high-scoring winger Jeff Skinner.Like last season, the Sabres started fast in the current campaign but began to fade before the calendar flipped the page on the new year. Now riding a three-game losing streak after Sunday's 3-2 loss in Boston, the club has only won once since the middle of December -- a 3-2 home win over Los Angeles -- and is 1-5-1 in its last seven matches.Worse still, Buffalo will have to grow accustomed to playing without the dynamic Skinner, who produced a team-best 40-goals wearing a Sabres sweater for the first time last season. The club announced on Saturday that Skinner, 27, will miss the next three to four weeks with an upper-body injury suffered Friday, sidelining the smooth-skating 10-year veteran while his teammates try to make up Atlantic ground.Skinne r's 11 goals in 39 games puts him fourth on the Buffalo roster, which is led by captain Jack Eichel (24 markers), Victor Olofsson (16) and Sam Reinhart (12).Though Skinner is without a tally in his last 11 games, Krueger said he saw improvements in the winger's game."It's definitely a setback as he was really feeling good of late, too, and it looked like he was on the verge of breaking out," Krueger said. "We all know he's streaky and we could've used that streakiness now." --Field Level Media
